Door knockers

I've just had 2 ladies knock on my door talking about god. They asked if I referred to him as god or the lord and read a psalm to me on their iPad and then said they'd come back when it was warmer.

Are they jehovahs witnesses? If not what would they likely be trying to gain? For me to go to their church?

As you can tell I'm not really very religious.

It's best just to say no thank you and close the door. I don't know any church apart from JW's that do this but I could be wrong. Yes it is to recruit.

I have a Buddha hanging by my front door. Apparently they didn't knock because they assumed I was a Hindu [puzzled[
This is what they told me when I pulled not the drive as they were leaving.

If you’re interested in exploring the issues and developing your own relationship with God, then I’d recommend your local parish church and a chat with your minister or vicar, OP. That way, you’ll be sure that you’re not being groomed by a cult.
Mainstream Christian churches provide a welcoming community of loving fellowship, support and the chance to help others.

Definitely the Jehovah's Witnesses. They're less persistent if you tell them you go to church every Sunday!
But I'd second Babdoc's suggestion (should anyone want to explore faith) - they don't turn up on your doorstep & talk AT you, they wait for you to go to them and talk WITH you.
If they'd actually have a conversation I'd be happy to talk with them, but I'm not interested in having them force their views at me.

I was going to suggest Mormons too. It'll be them or the JWs. I'd have politely told them not to bother returning when the weather was nicer.

Mormon missionaries don't do the door knocking thing anymore, they've changed the rules (at least in my area) and if it were them they'd be wearing name tags. I've had the JWs come round a few times, they know I'm a Mormon, I don't know why they bother. I need to be dressed up next time, normally I answer the door to them in my nightie or whatever random skirt/t-shirt combination I've thrown on that morning.

Where I live, we get either JW (lovely, polite, elderly/middle-aged black ladies in hats and their Sunday best), or Mormons (incredibly neat and well-groomed young American men with side partings) doing this.

As I am not interested, I usually tell them I'm Jewish or Catholic (I have a parent of each), rather than give away my real spiritual leanings (which they wouldn't understand, and would likely be fearful of). They clear off pretty sharpish, and don't bother trying to convert me. You could try that next time. Don't tell them you're CofE, though, they are apparently much more likely conversion fodder!

I used to have Jehova’s Witness visitors with their poor young children with them. After several I asked for them to stop bothering me. Was out on a list (they had it with them) of houses on the road it to knock on. They went on to ignore and knock. Started simply to shout at them to go away rather than open the door. So offensive forcing faith randomly.
Mormons also - always very young clean men in identical suits. Doing their misssionary work.
One advantage of living very central city haven’t had one of these ever here.

I get lots of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the door. It’s a bit annoying if I’m cooking or in the middle of something, but my God (!) they’re polite. If they weren’t culty I’d be happy to have a chat.

Their pamphlets are rather sweet. All beardy Jesus sketches from the ‘70s.

Just to add that we live on a secluded rural property not visible from the road and we still regularly get the buggers (JW, not Mormons).

They drive me nuts, it's such an invasion of privacy. Am atheist, so not a chance in non-existent hell on them converting me. Partner (also atheist) insists on talking to them to convince them of flaws in their logic. Total waste of time imo as you can't argue with stupid.

Why can't believers just keep their beliefs to themselves? Why do they have to try and convert everyone else to their way of thinking?

I don't believe in god but I would never be so arrogant to try and convert other people to my belief.

Because they believe that by converting you, they are saving you from eternal damnation. If I believed that, I'd be trying to convert people too! Would be rude not to, really.

Christians aren’t meant to “keep their beliefs to themselves”, Nowclueless- Jesus asked us to spread the good news of God’s love to everybody.
And Christianity is about deeds, not words- it isn’t some silent internal belief, it affects every aspect of our lives. We are asked to care for others and try to live out Jesus’ example in all that we do.
I can’t help finding it a bit puzzling when atheists react with “How dare you tell me that God loves me!”.

We get so many JW's knocking as we live in an area where there seem to be a lot of them, and on a busy street. They are nice enough but I got really fed up with it and now have a sign on my letter box which reads 'Religious preachers, please don't knock'.

We now only get the occasional knock.

I used to live between a JW house of worship and a Mormon one.

I would often joke that it would be the worlds politest riot, if there was ever a fall out about the monopoly of Knocking on people’s doors!

However, I do find people interrupting me in my own home, to push their beliefs on me is an infringement of my human rights and it should not be allowed.

You could always say no thank you and close the door, but nobody really should need to.

People have no right to be on my property unless I invite them or they have a legitimate need (police, ambulance, post man etc).

However, religion, door to door sales people (usually for N Power or talk talk), unsolicited Avon, or chuggers. Can just fuck off and I hope they are insured

last time jw’s came to our door my son opened the door and said in his creepiest voice, ‘we worship the devil in this house,’ and shut the door on them 😂 we have quite a big jw population around here so you see them most weeks prowling the streets.
