Does anyone have experience of prophecy or prophetic words?

Hi, I received a prophetic word today at church, at least I'm pretty sure that is what it was. Has anyone else experienced this?

The visiting speaker shared some words for the church as a whole and with one or two individuals. He said God knew I had suffered and had a lot of difficulties, which had gone on for a long time. (Which is true, I had a very unhappy, abusive marriage and have suffered poor health although I'm well now) and that the suffering was so I could understand and comfort others who were suffering. Also that I was a 'true mother' (This is something that I do in my work with teenagers, I'm often described as motherly and I have been wondering whether i should move on to a different job or not - seems like I'm staying put!)

I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced this, or any advice on how to make sure it's definitely from God.

Hi! Yes, I have experience of prophecy and prophetic words. Prophecy is only ever good and "in part". For example, in the context of what you have described, don't assume the "true mother" word means that you should stay in your present job. Pray about it, watch out for other words and signs, to test it.

I had a slightly different experience, where something had gone badly wrong at work and I couldn't understand why. A friend of mine, who has a prophetic gift, gave me a word - which didn't sound right to me at the time. Then, the next morning, after a night of prayer, I woke with a name in my head which made sense of my friend's word and explained the work situation. It didn't make things right, but it certainly helped me come to terms with what had happened.

Thank you for sharing. What you said about praying and testing the word makes sense.

Yes and agree with the requirement to test advice and pray. I sometimes get visions accompanied by a feeling I should say something to someone. I've been scared to do it in case I'm wrong, but my vicar reassured me that as long as what I have seen and felt feels positive, there is no harm in saying it, it is for the recipient to test and decide whether to follow or not. Sometimes what we think is a vision/prophetic word is not, but with practice comes discernment.

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Definitely agree with pp, don’t make important life decisons based on one off prophetic words, no matter how impossibly coincidental they may seem.

A friends of mine got taken in by a really horrible MLM scam, invested his life savings and got himself into huge debt. He kept going because he believed it was ‘Gods will’. A few of us were trying to gently help him see that he was wrong and that his choices were damaging his life. Just when we were getting somewhere, he went to a ‘prophecy night’ at church and was given the word ‘God wants to bless you in your business’, which made him continue until he was eventually declared bankrupt.

Ever since then I’ve realised how careful you have to be when giving and receiving prophetic words.

Please, please, don’t stay in your job just because some random person you’ve never met said you were motherly. Use wisdom, pray and work out what the best decison is.

It's a Zombie thread, but...

Ever since then I’ve realised how careful you have to be when giving and receiving prophetic words.

People stupid enough to believe in "prophetic words" are beyond help, anyway.

Oh please, it’s a few weeks old, hardly a zombie thread. I spotted it and wanted to share my experience since it’s relevant to the OPs question.

Really not sure how your nasty comment is helpful to anyone.

I hear my guides speak fairly regularly, it’s uncanny some of the stuff I am guided to do / know.
And I really don’t care what anyone else (narrow minded) thinks or believes Grin

Isn't it very narrow minded to not care what others think and believe. You're dismissing the possibility that they are right.

You need to be more open minded to the possibility that you are not being guided at all and it's all in your imagination.
