I like Holy, Holy, Holy; I think it's the chord changes. Think there are two scores it's sung to though.

slippermaiden · 16/06/2018 15:22

For me it is "Morning has broken", partly because I liked singing it at school, but mainly it was one of my lovely Grannie's favourites.

Charliebong · 17/06/2018 20:02

My favourites are "the king of love my shepherd is", " lord of all faithfulness, lord of all joy" and "when a knight won his spurs". (I have recently started going back to church and really happy to have found this section of mumsnet)

buckeejit · 17/06/2018 20:16

O holy night

Abide with me
Amazing grace
Be thou my vision
Will your anchor hold
How great thou art
Nearer my god to thee

daffodildelight · 17/06/2018 22:44

My Lighthouse - Rend Collective

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 17/06/2018 22:51

O worship the king
Christ is made the sure foundation
O praise the the Lord
Tell out my soul
Alleluia sing to Jesus
All people that on earth do dwell
lo he comes with clouds descending

I love all the above and couldn’t possibly choose Smile (love this thread!)

mstom · 17/06/2018 23:01

Love divine, all loves excelling - Charles Wesley is the best

PepperShake · 17/06/2018 23:02

The King of love, my Shepherd is.
Just beautiful!

PepperShake · 17/06/2018 23:06

Charlie bong - I’ve just seen your post. So weird the hymns you listed are my favourite too, only difference is I prefer be thou my vision to the tune of Lord of all faithfulness.

Oh and be careful on this section! It’s not all love, peace and joy unfortunately Halo

I love most of the classics, as posted above, not so much for the words but the memories and emotions they evoke.

I love the stirring sounds of 'Onward Christian Soldiers' but it feels wrong to say those words nowadays.

One not mentioned so far is this:

There is a green hill far away,
Without a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.

Nice memories, thank you all.

Fink · 20/06/2018 20:35

I love Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence too.

Also, I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
Oh Jesus I Have Promised
St. Patrick's Breastplate
The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came

I think I like all of them for rarity value, we hardly ever get them at our church.

Cherrypi · 20/06/2018 20:41

Heard a great forgotten classic at our special needs messy church service.
“Be bold, be strong”

Chorus
I am not afraid ( no, no, no)
I am not dismayed, not me!
because i'am walking in faith and victory,
come on and walk in faith and victory,
for the lord you God is with you.

MaryandMichael · 20/06/2018 20:53

You're Alive - I first heard this sung by CofE high school pupils, when I began teaching, and it's entirely different that way than the YouTube version.
For All The Saints
Now The Green Blade Riseth

Thank you for the thread. I had forgotten how much I love hymns.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 20/06/2018 21:21

I'm an atheist but raised Catholic and I I love hymns! I miss them so much now that I don't go to church.

My favourite is probably As gentle as silence, though I haven't ever heard a particularly good recording of it. The words are so beautiful and just make me wish I believed.

Petalflowers · 20/06/2018 21:23

Hills of the North Rejoice - loved the words, hate the tune (too, slow and ponderous)

lucydogz · 20/06/2018 22:02

I love the Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came as well. Also Hills of the North Rejoice (but not keen on the new words).

How deep the father's love for us
Once again
My lighthouse
In Christ alone
I heard the voice of Jesus say.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 21/06/2018 14:21

My favourite is 'Father, hear the prayer we offer' but I also like 'Immortal invisible God only wise'.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/06/2018 21:20

So many favourites I can't list them. The complete New English hymnal is my favourite play list on iTunes.

I loathe;
Amazing grace,
How great thou art,
Silent night.
And any type of 'praise and worship' music

Justwantaneasylife · 21/06/2018 21:23

“This is my body broken for you.” Sang it at my First Holy Communion and still makes me so emotional every time I hear/sing it.

OddBoots · 21/06/2018 21:27

My favourite older one is Make Me A Channel of Your Peace.

A fairly new one I love that we sing at church from time to time is Let Love Be Real by Michael Forster.

There is one of Stuart Townend's that I only heard of Songs of Praise called Vagabonds that I wish we sang (and lived).

Borris · 21/06/2018 21:30

There is a hope by Stuart Townend. I’ll have it at my funeral (hopefully not any time soon)

Family121 · 21/06/2018 21:32

Colours of day dawn into the mind,
The sun has come up, the night is behind.
Go down in the city, into the street,
And let's give the message to the people we meet.

^
this always reminds me of school

applesauce1 · 21/06/2018 21:44

I'm not religious at all, but I grew up on church and Sunday school and I still LOVE hymns.

In Christ alone
The Lord's my shepherd
All Christmas hymns.

picklemepopcorn · 21/06/2018 22:01

So many. So so many. Mainly fairly recent...

'Hosanna/break my heart for what breaks yours' is one.

Oh for a thousand tongues to sing

Whatever comes
