Anyone 'come out' as a psychic?.....

Hi. I work as a psychic at fairs, etc and have always been open about what I do, but never flaunted it. However, it seems as I get a higher profile I'm finding people who I considered friends and some family aswell are having more of a problem with this and turning their back on me. I know it's an alternative lifestyle, but I'd never turn my back on freinds who did jobs I considered 'not my thing'. anyone ever been in same boat?......

Hi Clair,
I sympathise. There are things about me which seem to alienate people whether it's that I'm a vegetarian or I believe in certain things which other people don't believe in. It does make things hard. All you can do is try to win them over or if they won't be won make new friend who might understand you better.

hi clair i have aslo found that. esp with my dad. we (my siblings and i) have always been brought up with the concept of ghosts etc and the idea that "it's not the dead that you have to be wary of" etc. howver, when i was in 5th year (now year 11), my mom tore a muscle in her shoulder and was in quite a lot of pain. i gave her some healing on her shoulder and it worked for her. however, my dad reacted badly against it and i even showed him my palms which were quite "sweaty" but not sweaty - it was like i had massage oil on my hands but i didn't iyswim. he said i should be in st.margaret's ( a local mental institution).

i am now wary of who i tell about my abilities. tho not so much as i used to be.
i found what helps me cope now is the sayiong that "people always rubbish what they don't understand". although, that is a very generalised statement; some people ask questions because they are curious. dp is now used to what i can do (basically because of what i've told him). people will come round or not, you can't force them - it may take some time but you will find out who your true allies are ( i don't say friends or family because some friends can be more like family members iykwim).

thanks fransmom - I agree with what you're saying. the only reason i decided to kind of be more open with it is because there is a strong possibility my local paper will run a feature on me and I wanted to let people know rather than they read about it and gasp in horror/ shock/ amazement iykwim!!
Maybe this is my lesson in life - to learn that not all will accept me. It's taken me 32 years to get to feeling at peace with being who I am, so I s'pose others may take as long....!!!

It is getting easier to find acceptance these days, although it is difficult if family don't understand.

Your last statement was spot on - it has taken you a long time so it may take them just as long. My take on it is that those who find they need to turn their backs on you are the ones who will be the losers in the end.

I'm lucky in having a very understanding family . Would be a bit hard for them not to be as mum is a medium . Coming out as a witch would have been hard if I hadn't been open with my friends about my background in the beginning.

P.S. My 6 yr old ds has said some very strange things and one of the top psychics in the country told me he is an 'Ebony Child ! ! he said he saw God with a blue of light all around him ! WHAT ? then he said that a man called Rupert Riley was his best friend, he was funny and lived in our street and he died in 1994 and he was murdered.
How odd ? ? ? ?

Unquiet Dad - No, I wouldn't do that test. A) I have nothing to 'prove', I either connect with my clients or I don't. Simple as that.
b) I'm not money-motivated in the slightest. As long as I can pay the bills and feed the kids, that's all I'm doing this for. To enter a competition to win a million dollars is an abuse of spirit. Shame tho, ......

I'd love to get a reading but am worried about just picking someone out of the phone book. Anyone near Cambridge? Do they have to be done in person? Think I've seen some doing the online.

Hi Clair. I wish you all the best and believe that you should stand by your abilities and not hide them away. Coming from a family that's always been a bit 'spooky' it's never been questioned as real or not by any of us. My only problem now is my 10 yr old DS keeps experiencing deja vu and told me off for waking him up recently by touching his shoulder in the night - needless to say I hadn't. As he's a bit of a worrier I'm not sure at this point if I should tell him it looks like it's in the genes!

Clairvoyant - many of the people who have tried and failed the Randi test haven't been doing it for the money. They've made it clear that they'd give the money to charity. It's not really there for people to win a lot of money - the stakes are high just to give it a bit of attention, really.

The reason it exists is that rationalists and sceptics, frankly, do feel that anyone claiming powers which would - if they existed - involve a rewriting of the laws of physics as we know them, has something to prove. But if you don't feel that is the case then there is nothing I can say to persuade you.
