New Mormon President- appalled at the broadcast

I watched part of the live streaming of the announcement from Salt Lake city yesterday.

Looking at the twelve apostles- the high quorum of the church.

All 12 are men, all twelve are over sixty, all twelve are white.

Not surprising but depressing.

Women aren't allowed in positions of authority/responsibility - good enough to make the tea and teach the children, but otherwise, their role is to support the men.

I think it was the Mormons who used to believe/teach that the Curse of Canaan (Noah's grandson) was black skin. Noah cursed his grandson, Canaan after his father (Ham) uncovered Noah's nakedness when he (Noah) was drunk and passed out. So, I'm not surprised there were no people of colour.

Its the old, straight, white man thing againAngry, but, I suppose, a lot of religious groups are much the same.

The majority of the leadership at that level is older people, I guess because when they are younger they are working and managing callings like that of bishop or stake president and then some get called to "higher" callings such as apostles.

The entire 12 are all white men, women do serve in higher callings but not as apostles, the general Relief society for example also travel the world and meet with presidents, prime ministers etc ... we also have general young women's and general primary which are all women with similar roles.

There is granted a lot of whiteness, only one of the 12 isn't American ... most of the reason is because there is a seventy too, made up of other leaders and they are who become part of the 12, given it's older people and the church didn't give black people the priesthood until the 70s (a whole other discussion in itself) that's why there are not YET any one who isn't white. There are now two slots on the 12 and the seventy are much more diverse, so I really really hope that someone more diverse is called, time will tell though.

Not quite true, women don't have the priesthood but they do have authority and hold positions, but yes a great deal of emphasis is placed on women as mothers, which isn't always easy. As for make the tea, if you talking about the drink, they don't drink it.

This isn't correct, I think there was many years ago some talk of the mark of cain, but the official church stance states highly that is not the case at all. So not sure where that has come from. The curse was to walk the world a wanted man, everyone knowing who he was. Mind you there is also rumour that the curse was to walk the world forever and he he big foot 😂 again, that is not what the church teaches more just people making stuff up and it becoming Mormon folk law.

But yes, the church is primarily run by white, male, straight old men. That's not going to change, other than hopefully, having some diversity in race. We shall see, probably won't know that until April when they hold the best bi-annual conference.

I really like Nelson (the prophet), he's a renowned Cardiothoracic surgeon, he's extremely young for a man of 93,he still skis! Plus he's quite humorous. When you listen to his life, you realise that age, brings a wealth of experience, especially someone as educated and travelled as he.

Not convinced mummy.

And joseph smith found all that in a sorting hat?

Something like that. Although instead of magic it's through the power of God. Least that's what is taught. A seer stone in the bottom of a hat, words appeared and a helper wrote them down. Lets face it, all religion has its moments if what sounds like complete insanity, eve talking to a snake, god flooding the entire world, Solomon threatening to cut a baby in half, giants and half breeds, Elisha setting bears to savage people, cursing trees and animals, raising the dead, taking on the sins of the world. Reality is religion is messy.
