My DD is singing this - it is lovely but I can't remember all the words - can anyone fill in the missing verses?

I danced in the morning when the world was begun I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun I came down to heaven and I danced on the earth At Bethlemhem I had my birth

Chorus

Dance dance whereever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance said he
And I'll lead you all wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the dance said he

??
?? It is hard to dance with the devil on your back
They cut me down and I leapt up high For I am the life that will never never die I'll live in you if you'll live in me For I am the Lord of the Dance said he.

I know this is dull but any help will be most appreciated!

I danced in the morning when the world was begun
I danced in the Moon & the Stars & the Sun
I came down from Heaven & I danced on Earth
At Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!
(...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)

I danced for the scribe & the pharisee
But they would not dance & they wouldn't follow me
I danced for fishermen, for James & John
They came with me & the Dance went on:

I danced on the Sabbath & I cured the lame
The holy people said it was a shame!
They whipped & they stripped & they hung me high
And they left me there on a cross to die!

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back
They buried my body & they thought I'd gone
But I am the Dance & I still go on!

They cut me down and I leapt up high
I am the Life that'll never, never die!
I'll live in you if you'll live in Me -
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!

I danced in the morning when the world was young
I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun
I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth
At Bethlehem I had my birth

Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the lord of the dance, said he
And I lead you all, wherever you may be
And I lead you all in the dance, said he

I danced for the scribes and the Pharisees
They wouldn't dance, they wouldn't follow me
I danced for the fishermen James and John
They came with me so the dance went on

Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the lord of the dance, said he
And I lead you all, wherever you may be
And I lead you all in the dance, said he

I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame
The holy people said it was a shame
They ripped, they stripped, they hung me high
Left me there on the cross to die

Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the lord of the dance, said he
And I lead you all, wherever you may be
And I lead you all in the dance, said he

I danced on a Friday when the world turned black

But I am the dance, and the dance goes on

Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the lord of the dance, said he

And I lead you all in the dance, said he

And I lead you all in the dance, said he

When I was new at the English church in Amsterdam we sang this and everybody except me knew the words, at least of the chorus. Eventually I picked up the courage to ask:"What's this all about a dance settee?"

Thanks too Jackie

UrbanDryad - I too remember thinking it was about a seatee - I remember thinking aout Jesus dancing around this seatee with lots of people following him!

I notice now my dd (4yrs) sings dance seatee so will probably have the same image.

I remember thinking 'for what we are about to receive' was 'for what we are about to go to sea' and I imainged God rowing off in a boat.

settee!

I knew 'seatee' looked wrong.

I love the tune to this but have found all the crucifixion references difficult, however my opinion of the song was turned around a bit when I saw the line "Dance then, wherever you may be" on a memorial stone. I think that is a beautiful sentance to have written there.

i love this song. Ithink it is a shame it is often billed as a 'childrens' song as there is so much amazing theology in there. I have to credit it with the first stirrings of understanding of the death of Christ, and that last verse - 'they cut me down, but I leapt up high, I am the life that'll nerver, never die' is in many ways the whole meaning of Easter. Must sing it for my children (whose current favourite song from church is 'God's love is BIG, God's love is GREAT, God's love is FAB and He's my mate! - somewhat lacking the elegance of Lord of the Dance!)

I love this too, and it is suprisingly easy to play on the recorder

Imawurzel · 10/04/2007 22:21

I used to go round singing the verse all the time.
Never knew the rest.
