Or am I the only apatheist on Mumsnet?

I think that's my point. You don't believe it to be(atheist) I (a believer of God). Do.

ollieplimsoles · 18/08/2017 14:25

Rat why do you think we were all created to know God?

YouRat · 18/08/2017 14:33

I should say I'm a Christian.
We're here to glorify God. To serve him.
As Christ did. My life here should be to follow His example. We all fall short.

How do you know all these things? Why do you believe them to be true?

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2017 15:32

"We're here to glorify God. To serve him"

I'm not,

Cailleach666 · 18/08/2017 15:33

We're here to glorify God. To serve him.

Scary stuff.
I have read the bible. I can't say god wins it for me. Even the 10 commandments are skewed heavily in this bloke's direction.

God as described by the bible is a thoroughly vicious and evil guy.
Jealous, wrathful, vengeful ( all according to him) he sounds spiteful, egotistical and mean with an anger management problem.
He smites when angry, carried out brutal acts of mass murder, and all the while demands that we love him.

I wouldn't even want to have a coffee with this character, yet christians want to "serve and glorify him".
I'd be backing out of the room.

Putting aside that fact that we can safely say he is fictitious then why would anyone look up to such a figure?

ollieplimsoles · 18/08/2017 15:51

Couldn't have put it better myself Caill Grin

But I do want to hear YouRat's response as to why they believer it, not what they believe (I already gathered that)

I'm not here to glorify god; I'm here to glorify life.

If the end result is t he same, that we enhance our world, then I don' t care whether you are motivated by emulating Jesus or by anything else. It's the way you live your life that counts, not the why.

OllieP and Dustin I don't think there would be a need for the term apatheism, had 'atheism' not been appropriated by the antitheists.

I heard Richard Dawkins responding to a question put to him regarding whether or not he'd consider taking Ayahuasca and the likes, he said even if he were to experience an epiphany he'd put it down to his brain. He's not taken any yet as far as I know Grin
One of the effects is the breaking down of the ego, he could do with a bit of that for sure.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2017 17:03

"had 'atheism' not been appropriated by the antitheists"
What do you mean?

SleightOfHand · 18/08/2017 17:03

It's the way you live your life that counts, not the why. Star

ollieplimsoles · 18/08/2017 17:08

Its a sound notion for sure, but what about those few following their religious texts literally and doing harm to others? They are completely justified in their actions too (in their tiny minds) because its written down its the word of god.

and it really isn't hard step- atheism is the lack of belief in any god- thats it, thats all it is.

SleightOfHand · 18/08/2017 17:11

If there was there would be no need for faith. It's not faith it's a knowing. I can't show or tell you, it has to be experienced.

SleightOfHand · 18/08/2017 17:16

Has anyone else got an opinion on Alan Watts?
