Praying for release (sensitive content)

I have a condition.

It is not terminal - it won't kill me. But it makes life unbearable.

What I am wondering, is if praying to be released is acceptable?

If you can ask God to take you?

I don't want to live but taking my life won't happen.

Advice?

If you want to ask, ask. If you believe in God then he will decide what's best.

Of course you can. Look at the Psalms for angry prayers to God and at Jonah 4:3 for a wish die.
Prayer isn't pretence, you can only be honest about how you feel. At the same time you know that God is a God of life, God wants your healing not your death. God answers prayers but not always as we want. Do you have someone in RL to work this through with?

Namechange - I'm so sorry to hear that you are suffering in this way - it sounds truly horrible for you.

I agree with gruffalo that you can only share what is in your heart: there is no point not being honest in your prayers. But I would hope that there are also people close to you with whom you can be honest about how you are feeling right now. Would counselling help? I understand that it won't be able to deal with the underlying condition, but it might help you to think about how you can live with it, despite its effects on you. Are there any support groups (online or IRL local to you) for people with your condition? I'm sorry if that's a facile answer - obviously I don't know the details and I don't want to write something that's trite and dismissive of your obviously very real distress - I am just hoping that you have support at this time.

You might want to consider coming to join us on the prayer thread. We may not have answers for you in the way that you have asked for here, but we're pretty good at hand-holding, and will be there for you... I am thinking of you and will be praying for you to find life more bearable and to be blessed with RL support.

Suffering is such a difficult thing to come to terms with Namechange, because when all is said and done we come up against the authority of God. If we say that God is Almighty, that He has the absolute power over life and death then there is no point in asking Him to do something He does not want to do. There is a text (2 Corinthians 12:7) where St Paul prays for his 'thorn in the flesh' to be removed. 'Three times have I asked Him', he says, 'and it's still there'. Now I am not for one moment suggesting that the reason for the 'thorn' as St Paul came to accept it (to stop him from being conceited) is the reason you are suffering. Nobody apart from God knows the reason for that suffering. But if we believe that God is a God of love, that He has our best interests at heart, then we can be sure that He will be with us in all our suffering. Of course we would rather not suffer and it sounds like you have got more than your fair share, but I wonder if it would be possible to seek God in your suffering rather than praying to be released from it.
Pour out your heart to God, all your misery, but then acknowledge that there may be things He wants you to know in this life, rather than in the next.
As TUO said, we are pretty good at hand holding on the prayer thread and you would be very welcome there.

I think that one of the purposes of prayer to to bend our will to God's. Certainly you can pray for release but you must be prepared for the answer to be "not yet".
I strongly believe that God's plan for us is always better than our plan for ourselves, because He knows the end from the beginning.
