First holy communion dresses

Has anyone bought their DD's dress yet? I have looked in town and seen only one dress that wasn't ivory (John Lewis), which we still have to order and get in her size to try on. DD really wants something simple and unfussy, would prefer a white cotton dress to something fancy, but I can't find any of those either. Also don't know if she would be the odd one out as others probably wearing veils etc, and how she might feel about that on the day.

Any suggestions?

We are having the same issue - DD hates the thought of flouncy dresses!

We bought ours for DD1 abroad not helpful. A couple of years ago and DD2 is wearing it this year. There was a big mix of dresses - long/ short/ flouncy/ plain and no-one "stood out" as for the headgear, we had a simple clip with a white ribbon and my DD looked lovely - no need for a veil. We have a local shop that sells dresses, but some of the mums have found dresses in debenhams and some bridal shops though they may be more pricey

You could also try 2nd hand as they only wear it for a few hours?

Thanks for the replies. I looked in Monsoon but they only had ivory in the shop, I will try online. I don't so much mind about the price but DD seems to be very anti- the style that we saw in John Lewis (which was pretty but formal). Nice to know there was a good mix of styles for your DDs Madaunt. There are only 3 other girls doing it with DD, I think they are all going quite formal.

When we were looking a few years ago debenhams had a very good selection which was very reasonably priced. There also lots of companies that sell them on line. I eventually bought one in Ireland.

I looked in Debenhams (in store) and there was a whole Christening section with clothes for older children as well as babies, but it was all ivory. Have I got it wrong, I thought the dress had to be white?

Check with the church on the colour, ours was fine with ivory. If you don't mind second hand, look on eBay for bridesmaid dresses, there is much more choice of those, and a plain one works well.

Our local C of E church does first communion for youngsters, but they don't care what the children wear. It was winter for DD's first communion and she wore a skirt and jumper. I assume this is for a Catholic communion?

Our Debenhams had a few white dresses in but nothing DD liked but ordered one she did like into store for her to try.

Monsoon also ordered a couple into store for me so DD has a few to try.

I got my daughter's in a bridal shop and it was very simple and also very cheap at this time of year as it was last year's range so don't think all bridal shops will be fussy and expensive. There is always a good mix of dresses and styles at our church from the very fussy to the very simple and some have veils or tiaras others don't.

Have a look at the Dunnes Stores website. I know a lot of people in my kids school also got dresses from Matalan online. Dd2 is doing hers this year - her dress is sort of off white - when dd1 made hers there were white, cream, off white dresses - the whole accessory - veil, gloves, bag side of it was much more low key than when I made mine. Tesco and H&M were the go to places for white/cream covered shoes. Sainsburys also had white shoes in last week that I almost picked up.

Thanks everyone for all the tips! I have looked at all the sites and have a better idea of what I like and what she may wear. I loved the dress you linked to Gymboy, but it's not in her size. Also saw a couple similar on First Communion Wear and I like this too www.ceremodia.co.uk/products/autumn-white-broderie-anglais-cotton-communion-dress . I tried M&S and there were none in store but there are a couple online that look pretty (and are cheaper too!). Think I will have to bite the bullet and buy online.. I have never actually bought clothes online before, which might seem a bit mad. I just like to feel them first Grin

Patsy - thanks for that link to Ceremondia, DD has fallen in love with this dress so I've ordered it and will hope it fits! DD's isn't until mid May so I have time to sort something else if it doesn't fit.

Try Little Princess Holy Communion. They are internet based and the prices are really reasonable. They are internet based but if you live in North London they can sometimes facilitate a dress fitting for you.
