Christening?

Both DH an I are christened, however neither of us are particularly religious. After a lot of thought we have decided to get DD christened. The only problem we have is choosing god parents. There is only really one person we would pick and cannot decide on a further two. Is it obligatory to have three or will one suffice?

What is your faith background? Are you C of E?

Why would you want a christening if you are not religious?

One is fine, but it may be different in different denominations.

However, if you are not intending to "bring your dc up in the Christian Faith", then why would you stand up and promise you were ?

Religion aside- why would you make a public promise or declaration that you have no intention of keeping?

What are you hoping to achieve by having a Christening? If you want some kind of ceremony have a naming ceremony and a party afterwards. No need to involve religion and I say that as a Christian.

What about a thanksgiving ceremony instead?

We plan on dd attending church regularly with mil fil dm and df as they are practicing Christians. And feel as with us, it will give her a good moral upbringing and then later in her life it will be her decision whether she continues or not

I didn't read 'not particularly religious' as a synonym for 'not religious' and really cannot see why a christening of this child would be in any way inappropriate.

I didn't say I was incapable of providing a good moral upbringing just that both me and DH benefited from being brought up in the church. There are definitely parts of our lives that were influenced by it and stand out in comparison to friends that were not. I didn't set out offend anybody or to be questioned in our decision. I just wanted advise with regards to godparents. Clearly I should not have asked

But its not your pil promising to raise the child Christian. Lying to God in church is not really the best start to a moral life is it?

Your child does not have to be christened to attend church.

I said we aren't particularly religious not that we are atheist. There would Be no lying in church

If it is C of E they like for a girl to have two females and one male all of whom should have been baptised. I would ask the Vicar if it is possible to have less. My DC were baptised Catholic and each only has one godparent

I know you don't particularly want comments on any other aspects but as someone who had to listen to my DC constantly asking why daddy wasn't coming to Church with us and then later why should they go if dad doesn't. it is something you should think about.
