On holiday for Islamic New Year?

We are planning a trip to Dubai/Oman for October. I have read that October 26th coincides with the Islamic New Year. Is this something I want to be around for (for cultural interest) or is a modest celebration that isn't particularly accessible to non-Muslims? I am aware that there will be a "dry" period over the holiday! If it's something to see, do I aim to see it in Dubai or in Muscat?

Thank you for replying, I would be interested to hear your friend's response. I work near a predominantly-Muslim area and love walking through on Eid al-Fitr and soaking up the party atmosphere, the food smells, the flag waving and sheer joyousness. I was hoping Islamic New Year might be similar!

crescentmoon, thanks again for the time you've taken with my question. Meant with all due respect, but it seems like I won't be missing on a major cultural experience if we aren't in either Oman or Dubai at this time. In this case, we may aim to travel earlier in the month.

Will keep an eye out for chand raat gatherings towards the end of July Smile It's usually quite easy to see when something is going on because the police turn up and block all the roads!
