Hello. Dd has been invited to celebrate Kanya Puja at her friend's house. We are a Christian household and have not come across this festival before. I think it is a great opportunity for dd. Hindu families are in a minority here, so it is a rare chance for her to find out about her friend's family's beliefs and traditions. I'm just not sure what to tell her to expect.
I've googled and read up a little. Am I right in thinking it's a celebration of 'girl power' (to put in very basic terms), creation and the culmination of nine days of prayer and semi-fasting? Dd has an Indian outfit and has been asked to wear that. I gather there will be 9 girls, each sitting on chairs or cushions, each representing a goddess, is that right? There will be a ceremony, exchange of small gifts and a meal. Am I on the right lines?
Anything else I can tell dd, just so she feels at home, being the only non-Hindu there and also a practising Christian? She's looking forward to it.
Thanks.
