Dedication gift/etiquette Please help!

Hi Everybody!

I posted in chat about this but thought I could post here too.

DH and I have been invited to a dedication ceremony for a little baby we love very much and we want to get something special for the baby - any ideas? Also I am pretty heavily pregnant - it is customary to wear a dress to events like these isnt it? I've never been to a christening or dedication before.

When Xavi was dedicated i think the best thing I got was a footprint kit. He was dedicated just before he was 1yo so you can imagine the fun we had trying to get his foot in it!

I know I posted on your other thread, but this time I'll respond to your q about what to wear. Most people would make a bit of an effort at something like a Christening or Dedication, but I didn't buy anything new, just wore a skirt and top to both my DD and DS's dedications. Finding something nice when you are pg is so difficult isn't it? Have you hat something you feel vaguely smart in, but comfortable too? Skirt and top, smartish trousers and top etc.? Unless that is you fancy the excuse to splash out on something new that you can wear in the rest of your pregnancy At our church no one gives two hoots what other people are wearing by the way, is literally anything from shorts and t-shirt to a suit (and that is just the minister!)

actual dress not neccesary - just something smart. Think somewhere between informal wedding and lunch with the PILs and you're on the right track.

Whatever you buy, don't get a money box - the last christening we went to the poor child got seven, and it's not like you can do much else with them.
Books always go down well - if you're not sufficiently comfortable with the whole church thing to get a Lion Picture Bible or similar, a nice copy of something classic is good - Narnia, Just So Stories, Beatrix Potter, Pooh, Alice. Write something in the front so they know it was from you when they're old enough to read it!

Thanks everybody for your suggestions!! They've all been really helpful - just knowing what is appropriate!! I am looking at a few of them on line now to see what I will go with & what I can get in time.

I have an outfit I might be able to wear but think I would feel better about how I looked if I got a new dress.

My brother designs and makes jewellery and when dd was born he gave us a lovely keepsake he made. It is an acorn in solid silver with a tiny silver oak leaf attached with dd's name and date of birth inscribed on it. This was the first he had done but i think he is looking to take commissions for them.

If someone can tell me how to upload a picture I can post it. I've had a look and can't find instructions on how to do it.

TicTacsMum - Thanks so much! The necklace your brother made sounds beautiful. I have actually already bought our dedication gift - but would love to see a picture of the acorn. You can post pictures in 'Member Profiles'

eenywifemum i've tried this but it won't accept it as the file is too big. Will take a look and see how to reduce it. BTW the acorn isn't actually a necklace but a keepsake, although you could probably put it on a chain i guess.
