Possibly a stupid question, but where do I get a shawl for christening?

DD's christening is organised for early February. we've asked the Godparents and I've bought her dress (two actually as reduced and couldn't resist!). When I went to see the priest he said I needed a shawl and candle for the service. Any ideas where I can get these? Also, slightly shallow question, but do I get a christening cake?

I used the blankets we'd bought for when DC left the hospital as a shawl, ds1s was from mothercare, and ds2s from john Lewis. They were plain white, light weight 'receiving blankets'
The candle was given to us by the vicar, maybe ask him where you get them?
As for the cake, I'd say that was up to you - although I've never attended a christening where there wasn't one :)

Thanks. Wasn't sure if it had be a "special" one. Looked on eBay and there a lot there but they're all personalised and a bit naff IMO!

Will ask my sister in law to do a cake. Joint birthday (for me) and christening for DD. killing two birds with one stone so to speak!

the priest should give you the candle (if a Catholic church he would anyway)
the shawl is actually described as a "white garment" in the ceremony so it can be anything white. My Mum made DS1 a little poncho type thing and I embroidered the baptismal symbols on it along with his name and date. We subsequently used it for DS 2 and 3 with their names and dates added.

It is a Catholic Church and he did say he has plain candles but that we might like to get a special one. Wasn't sure where to get one from, but have now seen them on eBay.

Mine were c of e, and the shawl wasn't compulsory. I hope you all have a lovely day

bit mean of him not to give you a special one!!

The priest gave us a candle for one of dds and we bought candles for other dcs from the back of the chapel after Mass (that sounds much dodgier than it was Grin

I've used christening shawls but then my mil crochets. For dd1 I completely forgot to bring it and just used a white bib I had in my bag, it just has to something white.
