Ok, big ol troubles on the FWR boards with upset and fighting and disagreements.

Someone pointed out that you lot manage to debate and stay calm and polite.

What is the secret?

How come things stay polite and calm and people feel free to join in and comment?

Is it personalities rather than views that are the problem?

All thoughts most welcome.

What's FWR?

I think we do ok over here because people try to consider what their post will sound like from another point of view. Most people will also say things like "I value hearing your point of view, though mine is very different" which helps to keep the any disagreement about the views and not the people.

I do think not getting personal helps - and religion is potentially very personal. And at least pretending that people have the right to an opposing viewpoint, even if you really think they are utterly daft for having it, keeps things friendly.

I think FWR (thanks for the explanation) is also very personal, but people are maybe quicker to see the "damage" that other viewpoints cause, which makes it harder to say "Well it's fine for you to think x, even though I think y"- if "x" is, say, that FGM is a valid cultural expression, then it's hard to be ok about it!

thanks muminscotland, perhaps it is a s simple as mindfulness and politeness..!
