(Catholic) Wedding hymns - help

underthevalley · 07/06/2012 20:19

Mr Priest I know will give us a helping hand with ideas but I want to have some of my own up my sleeve.
DP is no help - he suggested Kumbayah Hmm

But I always come up a blank with hymns.
Think I have decided on Joyful,Joyful (it's great plus falls into category of most knowing it) but that is.

(a full nuptial mass btw - if we are going to do it then we might as well do it proper)

Any ideas?

(also is it suitable to wear a knee length wedding dress in church? Esp being heavily pregnant?)

Generally christian rather than specifically catholic but we had this one at ours and I think it is perfect

Brother, Sister, let me serve you
Let me be as Christ to you;
Pray that I may have the grace to
Let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,
and companions on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

Let there be love shared among us,
Let there be love in our eyes,
May now your love sweep this nation,
Cause us, O Lord, to arise,
Give us a fresh understanding,
Brotherly love that is real,
Let there be love shared among us,
Let there be love.

Let there be hope shared among us,
Let there be hope in our eyes,
May now your hope sweep this nation,
Cause us, O Lord, to arise,
Give us a fresh understanding,
Brotherly love that is real,
Let there be hope shared among us,
Let there be hope.

Let there be joy shared among us,
Let there be joy in our eyes,
May now your joy sweep this nation,
Cause us, O Lord, to arise,
Give us a fresh understanding,
Brotherly love that is real,
Let there be joy shared among us,
Let there be joy

to tune

We had "All that I am" and "Bind us together". Third choice was "Make me a channel of your peace" but decided against it two days earlier when it was sung at a family member's funeral.

Oh, and my slightly 50's/ "new look" style dress came to just below knee, no problem at all.

We had Love Divine All Loves Excelling, How Great Thou Art, Guide Me Oh Thou Great Redeemer and a couple of Welsh hymns. We wanted organ belters IYSWIM.

I have never heard Joyful Joyful in church, bet it will sound great. Smile

I'm not catholic but we had Praise My Soul, The King Of Heaven and Be Thou My Vision. We also thought about I Cannot Tell (tune is Danny Boy) but for prods 2 was enough!

Dh also wanted When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, but it didn't "fit". He can have it at his funeral, i promised!!!

My Lord loves me, his love will never end.... Sorry no good at links but a lovely hymn. Let there be love as shown above is lovely. How great thou art? Also my two faves ...... I watch the sunlight lighting the sky...... Again would need to look up but the chorus is........ For you are always close to me.... Following all my ways.......

Ooooooh. I love a good hymn would be spoilt for choice :)

Have a wonderful wedding

I forgot .... I the lord of sea and sky..... Beautiful x

xkcdfangirl I just love the servant song which you suggested ... being a sort of kiwi and all ... good words for a wedding too.

OP just choose hymns you like and you know everyone will sing with gusto! As a chorister when I was a child we sang Love Divine at every single blooming wedding without fail - as a result I refused to have it at mine.

Praise my sould the King of Heaven is a good rousing hymn. if there are going to be children at the wedding it's always good to choose at least one hymn that children can really join in with like All Things Bright and Beautiful or Morning has broken. Try googling wedding hymns and listening to some on youtube to decide what you really like.

Have a fab wedding!

Congratulations! We had Bring Flowers of the Rarest, Lord You Have Come to the Seashore and Give Me Joy In My Heart.

FriskyMare · 08/06/2012 13:51

Was a long time ago but we had Jerusalem for the English contingent and DH's lovely welsh cousins sang How great thou art.
Can't remember any others Blush

Greenwing · 09/06/2012 16:16

Usually best to go fairly traditional so that everyone can join in IMO.

Entrance - Love divine, all loves excelling or Praise my soul the King of Heaven

Psalm - The Lord is my shepherd

Offertory - All that I am

Communion - Lord Jesus Christ - -

Recessional - Lord of all hopefulness or For the beauty of the earth or Be thou my vision

Other popular hymns include Amazing Grace, Morning has broken

Good luck with the planning and enjoy your day!
