I pray, but I don't know if I believe. Anyone else?

If I think about God logically, then I don't believe. But I pray most nights (started when something bad had happened - all resolved now, but the habit stuck).

Sometimes I pray asking for help, guidance, insight into a situation. Sometimes to reflect on my day, see how I can be better, learn from my mistakes etc.

I'm not actually very good at praying; I get distracted, veer off, lose track and "get chatty". Don't know if He/She (if they exist) mind about this. I don't pray "properly", like people do in church, synagogue, mosque, temple etc.

Anyone else feel like this?

You do pray properly, you have a real conversation about real life. And if you drift a little then point me to a bishop who doesn't.
Every time you smile at something beautiful; or share a tear with a friend, or a stranger on television; or work through a problem being the best person you can be, you are praying.
And whether your little human brain can encompass all that is God, or not, your prayers are valuable... to you, and to God.
Bless you!

I think what you feel is normal. Thinking about God and believing God takes a leap of faith that isn't logical. I'm a very logical person but logic sort of gets "put on hold" when I'm thinking about God and praying (although some would say its logical to believe in a higher person). Its about feeling. I don't think there is anything wrong at all about getting chatty with God. Jesus taught us to call God "father", and that means chatting with him in your prayers, surely? As well as more formal prayers that you might think feel right. My prayers sometimes make people laugh, but I pray what is in my mind and my heart, and God gets it from me "unedited".

Oh Mary, you put it so well.

Every time I pray, I find myself praying for faith and for help to believe. God knows we find it hard to understand sometimes. "Lord help mine unbelief" and there are loads of references in the bible to struggling with belief. Even in those days... Smile

I'm the same op, I do it a few times a day, often when I'm alone, in the bathroom, or getting dressed, washing up etc, I just speak my thoughts and ask for help, and say thanks when I've felt helped. Iyswim.

State: i'm glad I'm not the only one praying in the bathroom, sometimes that seems a little "impolite"!

Thanks everyone, for sharing your thoughts.
