First Holy Communion gift

DD will be making her first holy communion next month.

I'm really struggling for some ideas for a gift. When I was 7 and made my first holy communion I remember getting a missal and some rosary beads, and a prayer book and possibly another missal and rosary beads.

I wouldn't mind getting her a really lovely edition of the new order of the Mass, if anyone can recommend one.

Otherwise.... what???? I know my mum is buying her some jewellery so not sure I want to do that.

notonthehighstreet.com have a 'First Communion Keepsake Box' which is basically £25 for a dolled-up box file.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

(I was going to post in Chat for the traffic, but I can't face all the posters who will tell me I'm indoctrinating my child by dressing her as a tiny bride of Christ etc etc etc)

I got my niece a cross pendant from noths but as she is getting jewellery I would go for the box. Noths also do a fab picture frame that is a box - she could keep her mementoes in it?

I had a beautiful illustrated book of prayers, a crucifix and a rosary when I made my first communion as my sister did when she made hers.

Can you talk to your Parish priest? Do you have a piety shop attached to your church?

How about an icon? here

She could put it on the wall near her bed. They're beautiful things, we have a little collection of them. It would be something a bit different.

Hi, Ruby, my dd is also making her First Communion later this month, and I am watching this with interest! I'm sure there are specialised shops for these things, but I'm not in the know enough to know them!

Those are some lovely ideas, thank you. She's surprisingly thoughtful about her faith so I think she might enjoy a more traditionally religious gift.

Just had a thought, inspired by hiddenhome - I wonder where I might be able to get a really beautiful statue of Our Lady??? One of DD's names is Mary and she's very proud of it Smile.

We have been told to hang fire with buying new missals until our priest says as he says there is more translation; but I think a child`s missal is a lovely idea.

I got a beautiful one on ebay. It's old and from Paris, but it was only £7 Smile

ebay has some lovely Christian artifacts, oddities and lovely things.

Some lovely statues on there. DD has an our lady money box.

One of my most priced possessions is an icon of St Raphael. It was painted by a carmelite nun, using traditional herbal colours, henna and leaf gold. I paid over £300. It took over three months to paint it as each layer of colour was made individually, and it needed time to dry. Might be over the top though for a communion present. But it is a handmade piece of art, and blessed.

Both my children got hand made folding "travel icons" of Jesus and Mary, to remind them that he is always with them, from these nuns, as baptism presents. We opted to baptize them at the convent. Maybe a folding icon?
A bit like this?
My boys icons are bifold, rather than thrifold.

hiddenhome · 13/04/2012 23:02

ds2 has a tiny, folding icon. I do like icons.

I got an RC relative a russian doll - but instead of the usual dolls each was painted as a Russian saint/icon simialr to this:

russiawholesale.com/nesting-dolls/madonna-7-nesting-doll/prod_1062.html

a cross or medal on a hain, a rosary ring, a nativity set, if you have a family one then maybe one for her room.

Or less obvious but maybe plant a tree in the garden

I found this, which is a 1st communion gift missal:
www.mccrimmons.com/product/407/1968

Or maybe browse the site, mccrimmons do some nice things...

Thanks for the tip, Mary. Found a couple of lovely presents at a reasonable price for DS friends who are getting baptised in May.

SauvignonBlanche · 30/04/2012 15:04

Is your mum getting her a crucifix?
