Description - When God was a Girl. The history of women in religion.

It is presented by Bettany Hughes who I like so I am watching!

Don't know.

It's an interesting subject. Have you read The White Goddess by Robert Graves?

I would like to watch but I am knackered and back to work tomorrow so might watch it on IPlayer later.

I'm recording it. I am fascinated by the subject. Is it any good?

It is all about prehistoric statues of women / goddesses at the moment. What the represent / why they were made / what were they used for.

Just said that all the statues are voluptuous and no skinny ones have been found!

It is interesting! I like all that sort of stuff though.

Yep, me too!

I won't bang on about it here but modern (ie the last 2000 or so years Grin) religion and the way it suppresses women has always made me extremely uncomfortable at best and furious at worst. It makes no sense to me.

headinhands · 11/04/2012 21:20

Me too. Is it a series?

blobtobetter · 11/04/2012 21:23

Part 1 of 3 tonight.

Loved it, the link to the OU doesn't work though.

Monotheism is built on the bones of the goddess and it was good to see that explained.

I think a great deal more needed to be said about the impact of classical polytheism on goddess worship. It wasn't just Christianity that dumped on her - Greek and Roman myths often tell stories of the Goddess in her myriad forms that have been subverted to focus on the triumph of a male hero and the Goddes reduced to a victim that needed rescue or a monster that needed slaying. She has been around forever - male gods used to be her consorts - there was a devastating coup much longer ago than the time of Cybele.
