Do you have any favourite Bible verses?

Now that I have 2 bibles I have overcome my aversion to writing in one. For a long time it felt like sacrilege to write in a book let alone the bible!

I want to underline some key / important / moving verses so that when I flick through the bible they will stand out.

I have a few underlined already but I am incapable of memorising verses so there are loads that I just can't think of.

1 Thessalonians 5.16. Rejoice always; pray unceasingly; in everything give thanks. I've got it on my fridge Smile

Joshua 24:15 "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving let your petitions be made known to God.

To remember it, it's "When in a fix, Philippians 4:6" and it's about the only one I do!

I don't have a favourite Bible verse as such, but my favourite prayer is:

The prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I like these!

I am finding that I get a lot out of reading the bible. On days when I read first thing in the morning I feel much calmer and more understanding all day.

Deuteronomy (22:28-29 NLT) If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.?????

Leviticus Chapter 26:

28 then I will walk contrary unto you in wrath; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins.

29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

Psalm 94

The LORD is a God who avenges.
O God who avenges, shine forth.
Rise up, Judge of the earth;
pay back to the proud what they deserve.
How long, LORD, will the wicked,
how long will the wicked be jubilant?
They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers are full of boasting.
They crush your people, LORD;
they oppress your inheritance.
They slay the widow and the foreigner;
they murder the fatherless.
They say, ?The LORD does not see;
the God of Jacob takes no notice.?

Take notice, you senseless ones among the people;
you fools, when will you become wise?
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?
Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
The LORD knows all human plans;
he knows that they are futile.

Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD,
the one you teach from your law;
you grant them relief from days of trouble,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.
For the LORD will not reject his people;
he will never forsake his inheritance.
Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
and all the upright in heart will follow it.

Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
Unless the LORD had given me help,
I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
When I said, ?My foot is slipping,?
your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy.

Can a corrupt throne be allied with you?
a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
The wicked band together against the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.
But the LORD has become my fortress,
and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
He will repay them for their sins
and destroy them for their wickedness;
the LORD our God will destroy them.
Smile

So that would be a call for violence against anyone not of the Judeo-Christian faith? Wiccans, Muslims, Buddhists, pagans and atheists?

headinhands · 10/04/2012 11:04

You know what Hidden, I really don't think you actually want to see anyone suffer and like me I'm guessing you would do what you could to stop harm. Like me you're a good person, you pay your bills, care for your family and find the thought of any human suffering difficult. Upshot being you are morally superior to the god of the OT.

Isaiah 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

Isaiah 40 28-31: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no-one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Will come back with more - I have lots of favourite verses :)

HerRoyalNotness · 10/04/2012 14:34

Another I like, showing we can have a relationship with God

James 4:8 Draw close to God and he will draw close to you.

hattifattner · 10/04/2012 14:42

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

TimothyTheDog · 10/04/2012 15:52

Mark 9 : 24 "Lord, I believe : help my unbelief!"
I Corinthians 13

PrimaBallerina · 14/04/2012 13:04

Psalm 103 v 13-14
The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
For he understands how weak we are; he knows we are only dust.

It's easy to feel condemned and unworthy of God's love. This always reminds me that he knows just how shit I was, am and always will be but he loves me anyway.
