Just a quick question for a friend! (sorry if its silly as i'm not clued up on religion):

Are greek orthodox considered in the same category as "baptised catholic" for catholic school admissions?

Thank you!

No. Greek Orthodox is another denomination entirely. It might be a more traditional denomination than, say, Methodism but it is not Catholicism.

For Catholic school admissions you need to be baptised in the Catholic church, not the Greek/Russion Orthodox one.

They will probably get priority out of the non-Catholics though (at the Catholic schools near us, other Christian denominations i.e. batised and regular church attendance) are in a higher category than non-church-goers.

Think it depends on the school. When dd applied to our local catholic school headmaster told us being Greek Orthodox was viewed the same as Catholic for school admissions & she would take priority over other Christian denominations.

i understand that it may take priority over other denominations but would a greek orthodox child be considered as equal to a catholic applicant as most RC school prioritise catholics in parish (by distance)? i.e would G. orthodox child next to school be ahead of catholic 2 streets away as they are the 'same'?

You need to ask the LEA or the head of the school. I seriously doubt that an Orthodox in-catchment child would get priority over a Catholic in-catchment child; after all, the Catholic church is funding the school .... but given Aftereight's experience this needs clarifying with the school.

Yes.

The RC count Orthodox baptism as 'properly' equivalent. The Orthodox don't see RC baptism the same way :)

I'm almost certain I'm correct there...
