Astral projection / out of body experiences

Out of the blue, within a month or so, 2 colleagues (who don't know each other) told me about their out of body experiences. One said he had managed to "visit" a friend in another town through astral projection, the other said he would sometimes find himself floating above the rooftops as he slept (especially when he was a child).

That reminded me of an article I'd read in the guardian about someone who "slept on the ceiling" - they had no control over "leaving their body" while they slept and they were terrified they wouldn't be able to get back in. It disturbed me at the time (think I was in early teens when I read it, but it's stayed with me!) and I thought that couldn't possibly happen.

Have any of you had such an experience, either at will, or without having to try, that hasn't been part of a near death experience or during terrible trauma?

I am able to do this I can actually place myself someplace and one time I went to a house and was able to recall everything I saw in the room I was able to draw it. When I spoke to the owner of the house and showed her the pic she invited me in I couldn't believe it was the same as what i had seen. It's not scary and I love doing it u just have to get urself in a really relaxed state and picture were u want to go

Is it something you personally can do naturally, or did you have to work at it? What sort of places have you visited, I mean, do you go exploring jungles for example, or visit Everest? Can you visit the moon, or is it restricted to the Earth?

It first happened on its own without me trying and I wondered what happened I actually felt myself come back it was like a falling/pulling sensation and I felt as tho I had held my breath. It was scary at first but then I read up on it and it gave techniques such as relaxing completely and visualising were u want to go and this worked. I can now get into relaxed state and often a place just comes and that's what i can see without me knowing were it is. In the article I read there were stories about ppl who had been seen by others while having this experience

Yes, but haven't done it in 20 years. I know the book you're talking about, an island, adopted girl, 'bad twin', burned boy.

The 'grown-up' term is I believe 'lucid dreaming'.

AlpinePony · 16/01/2012 20:37

Sorry, you said a newspaper article, not book.

I haven't but I saw a brilliant documentary on lucid dreaming years ago, which has stayed with me.

They got a group together and asked them to meet up in their dream. When they woke all of them (except one) when interviewed separately, said they had indeed met up in the dream and talked, in th designated place, but that one of the group hadn't shown up. When they interviewed the no-show person he was very apologetic and said that while usually he could guide his dreams successfully, on this occasion he hadn't dreamed at all.

Fascinating stuff.

I've always regarded lucid dreaming as a different thing from astral projection, but then I don't think I've ever had a lucid dream. I have astrally projected during reiki and at other times whilst trying to sleep, or waking up. The thing is though, I can't say I went to anyone's house - but rather I go into different dimensional realms, which of course, sounds all bizarre, but that's the only way I can describe it. When I come back in to my body I realise just how heavy it feels. When I'm out it's like I am massive but very light.
It's interesting that 2 colleagues just decided to share that info with you?

i had a wonderful out of body experience a decade ago when on retreat with a well-known spiritual teacher, i was sucked pulled out of my body in what seemed like a tube a tunnel of light and it seemed that i went to another room and looked down on a person sleeping..i can still picture their face..the whole experience was surreal but totally magical.... i think the spiritual teacher triggered the experience so that i would know what was possible...
this teacher showed me many things in this way, it has transformed my life in terms of what i know to be true, what i know to be possible, it is an absolute blessing and there is a kernel of love peace joy bliss in my heart always that has never gone away xxx

I did this a lot as a child, and it scared me! I would float up to my roof from the age of around 15 and sometimes if I tried to be calm I would go towards my window, I sensed I could go out but was always petrified I would float away and not get back. I never told a soul even to this day and it was 20 years ago.

ds1 and ds2 used to share dreams. I remember ds1 telling me about a dream he had. Ds2 then interjected and started telling me what happened next. Ds1 turned around and said "Ds2, it was my dream!" and ds2 replied "Yeah, but I was there!" and the odd thing was that what ds2 remembered was in fact what had happened in ds1's dream. They also both talked of a person they called the "dream-maker" who seemed in some way to guide them through the dreams. All fizzled out by the time they were 5 or 6.
