Trying to find a quote/source for something going round my mind

The quote goes something like this:

"if you never try anything unless it has been proven/or can be proved to work, then nothing will ever be attempted".

Does anyone know the correct quote and its context?

Comes from his novel Rasselas, however, can be misinterpreted, as the character then goes on to make an arse of himself......

Much of the novel is concerned with the potential of the imagination to lead us astray and that one must engage in the real world.
