"Write a paragraph explaining some of the Gifts that God has given to the world"DS1,, who is 9yo, is a bit stuck on this - he wrote about Jesus being God's gift to the world, but has been sent to write more.
I'm struggling really, wondered if anyone could assist, in a way that a 9yo could understand?

Thank you

Moral compass - the ten commandments.

I realise of course you can be an atheist (i am one - well more of a heathen with pagan leanings....but that's not important right now Grin) or belong to a pantheon religion and follow these basic guidelines but they are laid out very clearly in the Bible. And are taken as coming DIRECTLY from God. And they are the basis for most of societies moral compass.

Oh and kittens!

MissAnthropy · 14/12/2010 16:41

My dn (10) says that God gave us redemption. His son died to absolve us from sin. So she can take a chocolate biscuit without asking and not get into trouble.

Interesting. RE has a lot to answer for.

MissAnthropy · 14/12/2010 16:42

Christmas.

And David Mitchell.

PortlyBlackSantaUpAChimney · 14/12/2010 16:44

David Mitchell is God's gift.

Simon Cowell thinks he is Xmas Grin - we're not helping are we?

ChippyMinTurnAgainWhittington · 14/12/2010 16:50

LOL
I will get DS1 to read this after tea

RC school... OK... so as well as Jesus you need the BVM and all the saints; also the Church (as an institution), the Pope and all priests and others with a religious vocation.

And chocolate biscuits. In fact, biscuits of all sorts... Xmas Biscuit

Love; forgiveness; for humans, self-consciousness; creativity; an awareness of God; a moral code (love God and love your neighbour; do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God, to paraphrase the prophet Micah).

Also, Jesus - by which we are given God himself. So God has given himself to the world.

Um.... The black death, unstable tectonic plates, headlice.

PotteringAlong · 14/12/2010 20:15

Think about creation story - God giving animals / humans etc. A bit of the tower of babel maybe - lots of languages and then link it to free will - God gives us the freedom to be ourselves and celebrate diversity etc

NonnoMum · 14/12/2010 20:15

The love between parents and child...

The love between teacher and student...

The love between teacher and OFSTED inspector...

The love between teachers and breaktime biscuits...

Need I go on?

PotteringAlong · 14/12/2010 20:15

aagh, just realised your DS is 9 not in year 9. In which case, just ignore me...! :)

looklauren · 14/12/2010 22:04

Trees, plants, flowers, animals, insects, mountains, rivers, lakes, streams, rainbows, snow, sun, rain, life, family, friends, teachers, love, babies, homes, food... And best of all, Jesus.

CheerfulYank · 15/12/2010 01:03

I tell DS (who is 3) that Mommy thinks that God made the world (and yes I do believe in evolution and all that whatnot, so don't even start with me :)) and so...pretty much everything.

Love, though. That's a good one. Like in John when it talks about how we only know God when we've loved; if we hate our brothers we hate God, etc.

6pack · 15/12/2010 13:32

Hatred and war - against those who follow a different god, or no God.
Cheers God - great gift Hmm

ButtonAzure · 15/12/2010 14:04

For DS (and the rest of MN) you could thank God for the option we have to believe in him, and the results if you take him up on it eg love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness and self control :)

UnquietDad · 15/12/2010 14:26

Be sure to mention earthquakes, tapeworm and malaria.

Oldjolyon · 15/12/2010 14:27

I have no idea on how to answer that... and I'm a RS teacher!

It really is not at all clear what the question is asking at all.

Sorry, that's not much help is it...?

egopostulosomnus · 15/12/2010 14:36

life love hope

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2010 14:36

When I look at that homework assignment, I'm so glad I didn't send DD to a faith school. I'm fairly sure she would have mentioned parasites.

CheerfulYank · 15/12/2010 15:58

Well, some parasites are good... :)

Additionally, Glee. And Torchwood and the Xfiles. Wink
