Would like to be. Used to be. Wish I could find a local Buddhist group to join, but there aren't any.

stigofthedump · 09/11/2010 21:34

Hi all, just watched the big silence and am inspired to meditate. Need to show myself some loving kindness and get a bit of that peace back. Would appreciate some like minded buddies.

cockneydad · 10/11/2010 06:31

Hi Butter - shame there are no local groups for you - it's not much of a substitute but I guess we could have a thread that acts as a little dhamma / dharma place!

Hi Stig - never seen it - maybe you should check out some local groups (if there any near you!) - it is very helpful to have the occasional group sit!

starter for 10 - what do fellow buddhists think about meat eating - I have to admit that I am an omnivore, I appreciate some of the arguments for being a veggie - many buddhists are veggies, many are not.... also, what about alcohol - I drink in moderation these days (did not as a young man).

Don't like alcohol tbh, but that's not to say I never like it - Xmas day, for example, I tend to spend it mildy tipsy on fizzy prosecco!

Meat - Hmm. I turned veggie at 13, turned to eating white meat and fish at 20, but certainly have never had meat very much, and now I probably eat 80% veggie meals because that's what I'm used to and what I prefer. I think eating meat clashes with the 'respect all living things' kind of idea, but still tis a personal choice, I don't follow it 100% of the time, but then I am not perfect!

gardenglory · 24/11/2010 11:38

stigofthedump - when is The Big Silence on tv or have I missed it?

WillowFae · 24/11/2010 11:44

There are Buddhists that don't feel that eating meat goes against the First Precept because they are not the ones that are doing the killing. Buddhist monks will sometimes eat meat if it is offered to them as well.

WisteriaWoman · 25/11/2010 17:25

Gardenglory - The Big Silence was on BBC a few weeks ago. It may still be on BBC iplayer. It's worth watching as its v thought provoking and makes you realise how many of us occupy ourselves with busyness and make no time for silence. There is a thread on here about the Big Silence - you'll have to scroll down a bit.

cockneydad · 25/11/2010 17:31

hey willowfae - that was my understanding too - I know a few chinese buddhists though that won't touch it!
