Does anyone know any classes, books, DVDs or whatever which are specifically Christian yoga?
Thanks

I went to Catholic school (in mid 80s) and from 1st year we did yoga. They just taught it as yoga. Is there a difference between Christian yoga and other yoga?

Surely Yoga is and always will be Indian and more specifically coming from a branch of hinduism, hence the name? Yogi are hindu holymen and the term yoga comes from them and the manner in which they practise their spirituality.

Thanks for replying.

I guess I was thinking of the exercise part of it rather than the spiritual side. I am wanting to do some exercises to get my body in shape (ha ha) not wanting to meditate or anything spiritual.

I guess what I am looking for is something that does not necessarily teach any spiritual side, just some physical stretching and space making etc! That's why I wondered about pilates.

There are also a couple of books I have found so I will continue to look into it.

Thanks

I'm a Christian and have practised yoga for years (on and off, and when I have time!). I really struggle to see why some Chritians have issues with it Confused as it is basically just a very good form of exercise and relaxation. Like all exercise it is good for both body and soul!

I don't know much about Hinduism but what I do know is that the Yogis got something very right in linking spiritual / emotional well being to the physical (IMO!). What yoga does do, more than other forms of exercise, is force you to concentrate on your own body, and on the 'now', and creates a sense of deep relaxation, which in turn enanbles you to 'connect' with your spiritual / emotional side more easily. What you do when you've made that connection, and how you use it, is entirely up to you! I try to pray / focus on God's presence in me during the relaxation period at the end of a practice.

I don't go to classes at the moment but I do use dvds. I find Rodney Yee very good. Very straightforward and clear instruction, always with a brief relaxation period at the end. No 'woo' element and no telling you what you should be thinking and feeling!

Sorry, I should also add that if you are looking for / buying Rodney Yee dvds online, most of them are by Gaiam, which is an American company. You just need to be careful that the dvd you are buying is suitable for playing on a UK dvd player!

this UK based website is fine, but be careful if buying from Amazon!

A friend of mine has recently been on a Christian yoga weekend, which she loved. I'll find out more about it if you like.

Thanks Clockface and Mrs Cadwalladar

I found this which looks lovely and right up my street. It is not exactly yoga but looks like the kind of thing I need.

Very relaxing and if you look in the shop bit you can watch a tiny bit of the footage for each DVD, it is filmed somewhere sunny and nice! Totally different from the snows of the UK! I must get fit and after all my diet starts and stops I am just going to try praying a lot for help with the diet and fitness thing! It's a struggle but these dvds might help me.

Thanks for your kind words and suggestions. I think for me yoga is a hard thing to get into, but that does not mean all Christian's will find it so. I am just not sure what the beliefs are behind it. But all I really want to do is get super fit because I am having fertility treatment sometime soon and my body is so out of shape thanks to too much fatty food! Also I am a bit achey and stiff, I am not at all supple and I think some type of stretching etc would help! Yes, Clockface would be very happy to hear about anything you know too. Sorry it has been so long since I looked in on this thread.

God Bless to all
