We took pup to the park, it was his first trip outside . He hated it , he lay down & would not move , Dh ended up carrying him around the park . He was very well behaved though when another dog came over to say hello wagged his tail & walked over to sniff other dog , then lay back down lol . Any tips on how to get him to walk while outdoors ?
TIA

I'd give him time, don't force the issue. Carry him if you need to, till his confidence grows. Keep upbeat and encouraging and don't give him attention for fearful behaviour.

Take lots of toys and treats out with you and he'll soon see walk time as fun time.

Have you socialised him much since you've had him? I carry pups about everywhere before their jabs and keep those experiences coming.

Is he used to having his lead on? I would work on that at home if not as that is quite a scarey thing when you are a young pup. Apart from that just try and get out and about in a positive way whatever you do. If it needs him being picked up for now again then fine - he can go down to stretch his comfort zone out a bit and he will start to get used to it. A few really short but positive trips out will soon have him feeling much more relaxed.

Thanks MeMudmagnet .

We have only taken him to family&friends houses up until today so he has been around people , children etc .
I will take him back again tomorrow & see how he gets on . The minute we got home today he pulled his blanket into the sitting room & lay down & fell fast asleep .

Thanks beautifulgirls .

We have been walking him around house , back garden with his lead on for the last two weeks but he hates it tbh . He is due to start puppy training classes next Tuesday so maybe they will be able to help with him lying down & not moving . Dh has just shown him his lead & his tail went between his legs & he ran to hide behind my legs

Put the lead on him when you feed him and do not pull on the lead just clip it on and let him feed take it off when he finishes.

Carry him to the park where you will be walking him. Do not put him down at all for several days just get him use to the environment.

When he is used to his lead walk him in the garden but do not pull on the lead follow him where he goes.

When he is happy with that then you can lure him and gentle direct him with the lead but treat him as you go along.

If he does sit down just take off the lead and walk away from him (if you are in the garden)

If he sits down outside gently encourage him with treats. Ot carry him away from the house and car and let him walk back. Most dogs will walk back happily.

In a few weeks I expect to see a post asking how to stop him pulling on the lead as he loves to go out and about.

Is he too hot? - it has been really too warm for a walk here.

And the best, most popular, smelliest treat is liver cake!

Liver Cake

Approx. 375g of Liver, 2 eggs and 2-4 cloves garlic.

Whiz in a food processor - add in 1 cup of Self-Raising flour. Spread out thinly on a large baking sheet. Bake for 20-30 minutes in a moderate oven. Cool and chop. Freezes well.

Thanks i will try the softly softly approach again this afternoon , Will put his lead on at mealtimes from now on & try get him used to it . We have been putting it on twice a day & coaxing him with treats to get him to walk around the garden , which he was starting to get used to that ( we just follow him so he kind of walks us lol) But i think he was overwhelmed by the park & we dont want to turn him off going out . I will go armed with treats & toys & see how it goes today .

Thanks for the recipe val , ill get some liver later & make that for him

sharbiebow We are in Ireland so never too warm over here . It had been raining all day & we got him to the park for an hour in between showers , & i always bring water & his bowl with me . (had images in my head of pup running around carefree & Happy ) lol

give him time - he's only a baby.mine used to lay down and we'd have to carry him home.

Our pup stood and shook the first few times we took him out (just a little walk down the road). Once he got the idea of what we were planning he'd just sop at the bottom of the drive and refuse to come any further. When I picked him up he'd be shaking like a leaf. So I'd carry him for five mins or so, and then put him down to walk home. We made the walk slightly longer each day, always the same walk so he got familiar with the landmarks. Now he spends most of the day hoping that someone will take him out, and is very happy to go anywhere. I'm sure your pup will get his confidence in the next few weeks, I think it is all just very overwhelming to start off with. Perhaps the park was just too overwhelming? Can you find somewhere quieter with less smells for the first few weeks perhaps?

Just back from the park he had a lovely walk today . Dh walked in front with treats tempting pup to follow & dd had his favourite toy ,it worked great , he still sat & lay down a few times for belly rubs but no where near as often as yesterday. Lots of other dog owners came over to make a big fuss of him & he loved that although a female dog bit him on his nose while her owner was rubbing pup so i picked him up until they left , A Huge beautiful boxer dog played with him & he loved that . It was great to see him more confident with his tail up & wagging the whole time . He's fast asleep now exhausted lol . Thank you all for your advice .
