Two poorly cats what could it be?

I have three cats and two of them suddenly seem to have become ill in the last few hours. Nothing spectacular but both are unusually sleepy and very difficult to rouse, and they've both gone off their food and lost interest in going outside. Symptoms started in both at the same time and they have that kind of "big eyes" look like they're frightened of something when I manage to wake them up. The slightly less sleepy one has just got up and had a tiny drink but looks a bit wobbly on his legs.

Am very worried! Will call the vet tomorrow morning - just wondering if anyone knows what it could be? They're both fully vaccinated.

Is it possible they've both eaten something that could have caused this? If your cats are insured, does your insurer have a helpline?

My cats are both poorly at the moment (one is overnight at vet's tonight ) so I know how worrying this can be.

Have you used any flea products on them at all in the last 24hrs or so? Could be a reaction to certain ones, especially some of the shop bought brands. (and especially if you used a dog one by mistake) If this is the case please ring your vet now.

Interestingly I put some spot-on worm treatment on the nape of one of them's neck earlier on today - initially I wondered if it could be a reaction to that but then they both have identical symptoms - cat 2 would never go near enough the other one to lick the stuff off!

Belle hope yours are better soon. It's awful isn't it when they are ill you feel so helpless. Good idea about the helpline though we're with Directline, doubt they know much about pets!!

Oh dear Maryz that's got me thinking - both are neighbours have cats themselves but could be from further afield I guess as both are wandering cats. Will deffo take to vets in the morning. I hadn't thought of that as neither has vomited or had diarrhea as far as I know.

Hope yours are ok too, thirtysomething. My cats' insurer does have a helpline but I've never used it and just rang the vet and burst into tears. I'm hopeless where the cats are concerned!

yes I'm the same Belle - will no doubt hardly sleep tonight and be waiting for the vets' to open in the morning.

No 2 has perked up a bit now and just sat on my lap and had a little purr, though fast asleep again already.

Am getting very jittery at the thought of anything being badly wrong with either of them they are so very little (2 and 3) and such a huge part of the family.

If No 2 has perked up, that's got to be a good thing? If my cats have been fighting they can be a bit like this... It may be that they need to sleep off whatever it is.

I hope they're much, much better in the morning.

loopyloops · 07/07/2010 22:23

Yes, sounds like poisoning to me. There are 24hr vet lines that might be able to help you? I hope they are ok.

hellymelly · 07/07/2010 22:25

Does sound like something they have ingested to me,they sound drugged.Personally I would go to the out of hours vet in case of poisoning.May be a plant or anything, but I wouldn't take a risk with it.I hope they are both fine soon.

thirtysomething · 08/07/2010 09:16

Thanks all - poisoning definitely sounded like most likely scenario last night but weirdly (and very, very happily!!) both seem right as rain this morning!!! Both eating normally, wanting to go out and, most importantly, all cuddly and purry!!

So it's a mystery really as they seemed so poorly yesterday! Thanks so much everyone for your replies and kind wishes and Belle I hope your puss is feeling better?

update? are they ok this morning? I hope so.

thirtysomething · 08/07/2010 09:18

Thanks Loopy - yes full purriness has been restored! So guess I'll never know what it was but am so relieved they seem back to normal!

Ah brilliant.

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/07/2010 16:00

Bit late onto this one today (am working) but so pleased they're back to full purriness.
