Any Vets around? or people knowledgable in how much a cat should drink?

Went to vets for annual check up earlier this week,
I mentioned to the vet that our cat was drinking more than she had before and we talked about how much sshe should be drinking and for me to measure it.

The figures were from the top of her head.
The cat weighs 5kg and she suggested no more than 50mls in 24 hours.

does this sound about right?

at the moment the cat is drinking slightly more than double that. ( I know it is hot at the mo)

Shoudl I be worried?

Not a vet, but have had several cats. Wouldn't it partly depend on what you're feeding the cat? Wet cat food from tins or pouches wouldn't leave the animal as thirsty as dried kibble.

OK so I think I have cleared it up..

through t'internet have found that figure associated PER KG of weight so 45-50ml of water per KG of cat so at 5kg's sh should have 200+ (Phew!)

Sorry, I went out. I honestly couldn't have told you anyway, the cats share water bowls with the dogs in my house. But glad you're sorted.

I m sure she drinks alot outside - she seems to favor muddy puddles (when we have them)

50ml per kg per day is normal. 5kg cat therefore 250ml is normal, however remember that is fluid from all sources including wet foods. A genuine excess would be double that amount (ie 500ml) and anywhere in between is a greyer area that should be checked out to be safe.

thanks Beautiful girls

I had mis understood the vet and thought she should ONLY be drinking 50 mls a day and was concerned that we had got to 200 mls of water in the house (she eats dried food)

Phew!! She is 14 and we weren't ready for major health problems just yet
