The new BARF diet has given us 1970s retro white dog turds

Just came over all peculiar in the garden whilst picking up the dried white dog shit. Was whizzed back into my back garden 30 years ago picking up the dog poo with my mother's garden trowel.

Aarh - but this does mean the dog is having too much bone so add less of that to the diet

mine sometimes have white poos aswell though and vet said this was normal on BARF ??

oh really minimu, I didn't know that. They were, um, very well dried [dog turd slattern] . She's only getting one chicken carcass a day, maybe the white ones are the chicken carcass poos and the modern brown ones are the kibble/mince poo.

No, it means that the only waste products left over are excess bone, all the good stuff has been absorbed by the body.

Its only crappy cereal filled dog food that result in huge smelly dog poo.

I love the BARF diet, the after effects are so much neater and well, less smelly and you get a fit, healthy dog into the bargain.

yy to neater turds, I also LOVE that I get all the chicken carcasses (and sometimes the wings lobbed in too) for free. Gotta love the free dog food.

I've been watching for constipation v closely as I thought this was a sign of too much bone. So far so good .

What does barf stand for?

It stands for Bones And Raw Food diet, a pretty contentious method of feeding your dog.

This is where I admit that I was in my 20s before I realised that white dog poo wasn't in fact done by white dogs Tis DH's favourite story of things you just assume to be true. I think it's because when I was little, next door had a white poodle that used to do white poos everywhere and so I just thought .......

BabyDubs, I'm quite new to it and am still easing myself (via the puppy ) into it. Somewhat confusingly there isn't a standard BARF regime, people all seem to do it differently. The general rule of thumb, and I'm still learning so am more than happy to be corrected is you feed the dog 2-3% of its body weight per day (more for puppies) 60% of which should be raw meaty bones (chicken legs, carcasses, ribs) and the remaining 40% non bony stuff like offal, mince, tripe (mm green tripe - om nom not) sardines, egg - the list is quite long.

Some people add blended vegetables.

Some people add supplements.

Some people half barf (me) and feed kibble at some meals.

I've decided to try it as I have time to sort it all out, plenty of freezer space and am totally non squeamish (although the dog does gets fed outdoors).

So far so good. The vet is very happy with her weight/growth and how she looks.
