What is the most a cat can have?

I have seen 8 though three died pre-delivery. Normal is between 3 and 5.

Yes I think 8. One of ours delivered 8 live and healthy kittens years ago, although she was so fat at the end she could hardly walk, so I don't think any more would be possible!
Last litter we had was 5 and we lost 2 of them, I think this is more usual.

Ours had 7 first time round, they all died. 2nd time around she had 8, four died almost straight away, the remainder we tried to hand rear and ended up with one....

I think that was mostly because she just walked away from them, she just wasn't interested and it took a week's worth of hormone injections to get some milk into her, a week of us feeding kitty every 2 hours, but we do have a jolly, semi human cat at the end of it! Needless to say, she has been spayed, and he's been castrated.

I've known a cat who had eight, but five were born dead or died within the first 24 hours. She was living as a stray at the time so perhaps some could have been saved with handrearing, but not sure.
