Likely to be an abscess, is probably tooth-related, and requires veterinary attention I'm afraid.

southeastastra · 19/06/2010 20:55

thought so, would they just drain it or does it usually need an op?

Rabbit abscesses can be much more complicated to treat than those of say cats. The most ideal treatment is complete surgical removal of it, but that is often not possible due to the tooth roots and/or bone being involved. Give your vet a call and get an appointement for Monday. Ensure she is eating properly in the mean time though and if any reduction in her eating please call the vet and arrange to be seen more urgently.

i will thanks. she is quite old now so i suppose that would make a difference in how she'll be for an op

I'm afraid abcesses are quite serious for rabbits, unfortunately. Still, you are catching it before she is actually feeling ill, which is good. A tip - give antibiotics, when they are prescribed, on a spoonful of jam - they love it!

awww hope she is ok, my rabbit had this and ended up having a tooth removed also

I had to wrap him in a towel and syringe salt water into the wound every day to help keep the infection out once they'd emptied it all at the vets
wasn't very pleasant for him but he recovered fine!

thanks yesterday, just worried about her age and how much pain she's in. she's such a lovely rabbit - complete duchess
