PHEW! no cancer found,

Posted a couple of weeks or even last week about my dog, what we thought was bad breath a few weeks ago turned into a majorly expensive, many trips to the vets and lots of tests, bloods, xrays and head shaking from the Vet and a very poorly dog later, we have some results!

the vet called me a few minutes ago as she just got some results back from the lab. The good news is that there is no cancer in his mouth - or his body, which is fantastic news.

He has an ulcerated styatoma - please, ignore spelling and I am sure that I have the name wrong, but that is what it sounded like on the phone. I am just so euphoric that my 14month old is going to get better soon. Got to wait for swabs to come back to see what sort of treatment he does need, but continuing with what we have for now.

You have no idea the relief I felt when she called to tell me. Have to say the children are so pleased, I know they were worried too.

Really pleased the results are good news.
Did the vet give any idea of the treatment involved or any long term effects.

not yet kid - Vet knew how worried I was re the C word, we lost our last GSD last year to it and although rare it was on the cards for the youngthing!

When the swabs come back it will show exactly what treatment is necessary and what caused it. Probably antibiotics, mushy food and his tummy tablets for a while yet until it clears up, is my personal opinion.

Just called the breeder (original Mummy) as she popped round to visit him yesterday after we told her how poorly he is, she is so pleased that he is getting all the love and care he needs and will be over next week to visit him again. She was worried too.

By no means is he OK - he is still poorly - although he is lounging on the sofa watching the blaarddy footie! Going to take him for a little stroll soon, although no ball playing for him, he is happy being out and about.

Thank god for that. I'm so relieved for you.

Hope Loofa gets well very very soon, sending huge cuddles his way.

thank you, will know more late Mon/Tuesday, not out of the woods yet, but fingers crossed he can be treated, it all depends on what is causing this. hmmf

just made him some lovely cod and rice mushed up with a tin of RC easy digest food.

Just had Vet on the phone, they have some swab results back but it isnt as easy as ABC. Loofa has a strain of E coli, which I think in itself is treatable with a special antibiotic, but it is very strong and they use it in humans to treat TB, so that gives you an idea...

However, they have also discovered a rare, new bacteria that doesnt even have a name yet - so rarely is it found. This has flumoxed the pathology team and they were away to have a brainstorming session this afternoon to come up with some solutions. It isnt known why he has this, or where he got it from. The only thing we do know for sure, is that he got this mouth thing after he got was castrated, so it might have something to do with his immune system

Oh I dont know. The vet is very concerned, the pathology people are confused and well, my pup is getting thinner and thinner and not any better. All the treatments he has had so far wont kill off this bacteria, so that was a waste.

Oh no, that doesn't sound like good news.
I really hope that they can work out how to treat it and for your puppy to start gaining weight.
God, what a worry for you

Vallhala · 21/06/2010 20:37

Oh Jeez, Jax, I don't know what to say.

Perhaps you might consider ask your vet about the possibility of a consultion with one of the specialists, such as those at the Animal Health Trust or at Dick White Referrals in Suffolk? Obviously there are similar specialists in other counties, these are just the respected ones in my area.

I hope to goodness that the vets can find the answers and that Loofa soon starts to improve and recover.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I have every faith in my vets, they are fantastic and I have a referral place set up, well I know where to send him to, they used to be called DAvis Whyte, now Whyte.

The breeder works for guide dogs, so has loads of contacts and is doing loads her end to help us and to see if she can come up with anything.

It is so sad, I am worried to death about him. And everyone keeps asking and it is getting harder and harder not to have a big blub in the middle of the street/playground etc.

snot fair at all.

Keep us updated. I really hope to hear some good news soon ((hugs))

JaxTellersOldLady · 23/06/2010 16:17

the vet called today, loofa is going tonight 6pm. They are going to start him on these high dose antib's and see how he does on them.

If that clears up his mouth then all good, but the pathologists have decided that they cannot rule out a rare form of cancer at the moment.

Oh, and there is no charge for this evenings visit. HAAAAAAAAAAAAA that is lovely I've already paid £600

oops hit the button too soon, over the past 3 weeks.

My emotions are all over the place. I want him to get better, he is far too young, almost 15 months old.

Anyway will weigh him tonight at the vets, if he hasnt put on any weight then I think we can all assume the worst. He should have put on something, he has been eating lots of good but bland food. Christ, I dont feed the kids "line caught Cod" but the dog... well yes.

Fingers crossed for some good news X

Vallhala · 23/06/2010 20:18

Oh Jax, everything crossed here too. I can only imagine how worried you are.

Stay strong, thinking of you and sending so many positive thoughts to Loofa.

I haven't checked for a new thread yet, but how did it go at the vets tonight?

JaxTellersOldLady · 24/06/2010 10:46
