which kitten name?

OK, finally have kitten. Not really replacing the cat I lost in March (after 18 years), just happens to be another female tabby.

So I like names with meanings for pets. We are down to the following shortlist and wanted some thoughts. Any other ideas welcome, but we're finding it hard enough to choose now!

Aine: Celtic, "Joy". Also a fairy queen.
Edana: Celtic, "Tiny Flame".
Keena: Celtic, "Brave".
Lilka: Polish, "Warrior Maiden".
Zelda: German, "Warrior Maiden".

btw, she is tiny, 10 weeks old, slightly crazed and very brave. She faces down our huge dog and chases the other cats off their food. So what do you think?

How d'you pronounce "Aine"?

MammKernow · 11/06/2010 18:27

Hi LadyCad, good question maybe should look into that! Assuming its A-in.

Zelda.

kid · 11/06/2010 18:31

I like keena, it sounds good 'keena the cat'
I quite like Cody but no idea why or what it means!

Tortington · 11/06/2010 18:32

shitty

kid · 11/06/2010 18:36

Haha, what makes you pick that name custardo?
Thinking of my parents cats, I'd suggest scratch!

Vallhala · 11/06/2010 18:37

Keena is nice.

Or perhaps Acushla (Irish, "beat of my heart").

LynetteScavo · 11/06/2010 18:42

Custardo is right, it will probably shit everywhere initially.

lazydog · 11/06/2010 18:51

Aine is pronounced pretty much as an English person would say "onya" or possibly "arn-ya" (depending on dialect/accent) in my experience. I'm English born but my Mum is from a huge Irish family, so I have 90% Irish relatives...somewhere in the region of 80 first cousins, in fact, LOL!)

I like that Keena one!

sayanything · 11/06/2010 18:51

If I had another cat, I'd call her Lethe, meaning oblivion, pronounced lee-thee (th as in theme).

But I always give my cats ancient Greek names, our two are called Amphitryon and Clytemnestra. It satisfies my inner ponce .

pointydog · 11/06/2010 18:58

Zelda because I think it's funny

MammKernow · 11/06/2010 19:08

lazydog: thanks for the pronunciation tip! Aine was my original favourite name, and I like it more now I know how to say it.

DD likes Poppy, but she called our first chicken that name already. DH doesn't like my inner ponce names and these were the best he'd agree to! I wanted Isis, but he didn't like it. Did get him to agree to call our dog the Cornish name for 'noble hound', and dog grew into it at about 7 yo

I think its Aine or Keena. Maybe.

sayanything, that sure beats my 3 cats, named after an African footballer, a flower and a lion!

diddl · 11/06/2010 20:07

I love Isis-a friend had that for a Siamese.

I like Poppy

Ours is named after a lioness.

diddl · 11/06/2010 20:08

Any chance of a pic?

AvadaKedavra · 11/06/2010 20:09

Zelda. Mind you, one of my 11 week old kittens is called Elvis, so maybe not the best person to advise

grumpypants · 11/06/2010 20:09

what about Cattiva (naughty in Italian). aka Cat Eva. Sorry

TulipsInTheSunshine · 11/06/2010 20:12

aine is 'AWN-YEAH'

I think Lilka is the best by miles... love it and it would suit a female tabby perfectly

My female tabby was called Tess, sadly she escaped outside one night at 8 months, got chased by a dog and ran in front of a car miss her loads though...

tabbies smell so differant to other cats don't they? i always found it bizarre that i could tell it was Tess who'd climbed into bed with me in the pitch dark just by her smell!

SilveryMoon · 11/06/2010 20:14

I love Isis! That's a lovely name for your cat.
I have 2 male cats. I am extremely boring and called them Toby and Oscar.

DrivenToDistraction · 11/06/2010 20:17

Lilka

diddl · 12/06/2010 09:17

Oh Tulips that is so sad.

Love Tess as a name.

lilruthie · 06/10/2010 12:51

Thanks to everyone for the ideas!

We called her Lilka, she gets called Lily, lilcat, Lil, and killer. She and Jess (pretty birman) bring in a succession of shrews and birds Sad

We rescued lots of them alive, but last night I grabbed Lil (who had a screaming shrew in her mouth) to get her to drop it. So she looked at me...and snapped its neck [hshock]

She is now curled up on my lap, purring like a loon, the picture of innocent kitten-ness [hhmm]
