Cat had a fight and came home all stinky

What happened? I can't wash him can I? He smells a bit poohy/manure-ish but could he have been sprayed on? It is quite strong, my hand stinks after I touch him. He is now sitting on my bed - nice. The fight sounded awful but I guess this is not surprising, I was very worried about him.

He is a new cat, my first and I've had him about 6 weeks. Neutered male about 15 months old.

He could have been sprayed on or even rolled in something nasty. He will clean himself but you can wash your cat with warm water if you want. He won't like it much though, so watch out for his claws if you try. You could try sponge cleaning him, this way he won't get as wet and will still get clean. If you have a towel handy you can dry him quickly and he may be happier.

He could have discharged his anal glands.

One of ours was in a fight, and came in stinking. I thought he'd poohed himself, or rolled in fox poo - it had that sort of smwll, and looked like runny poo. It turned out he'd been bitten on his bum (hence the anal glands discharging). He went on to have a nasty abcess on his bum, and got quite ill.

Tip - if a cat has a high temperature, his ears feel hot.

Also we shut him in the utility room until he'd cleaned himself. (Yuk)
