IMPORTANT WARNNG - PARVO VIRUS

Vallhala · 01/06/2010 19:54

WARNING.

I've just been told that a case of Parvo virus has been confirmed in a litter of GSD pups. These pups are in CHATTERIS, CAMBS, where at least one other case of Parvo has been diagnosed in recent weeks.

Pray to whatever and whoever that those poor pups, who are now in isolation, recover fast and fully.

I do hope they make a full and quick recovery.

Lizcat · 02/06/2010 13:20

Also Parvo diagnosed in West Berks in last 24 hours in a pup that originated in Brighton. Unfortunately this pup died despite our best efforts. It looks like it's on the war path again.

oxocube · 02/06/2010 14:22

Val, maybe a stupid question, but can dogs still contract parvo even if they are vaccinated? Am presuming that if so, the vaccine would at least give the poor creatures a fighting chance

Vallhala · 02/06/2010 16:15

As far as I'm aware the vaccination is a live virus, so yes, it is possible. Certainly many years ago my very first pup contracted Distemper dispite having been innoculated against it. He was a lucky boy to survive it.

Another worry for dog owners
I stupidly believed they have their injections so are therefore protected.
When I read the true facts, I scare myself. Haven't read about parvovirus yet but think I should.

misdee · 02/06/2010 18:46

friends dog gied of parvo.

been a few local cases over the last months.

thought if they were vacinated they would be fine

kid · 02/06/2010 19:02

Was your friends dog vaccinated against it? How old was the dog?
I have a very big fear of dogs dying , especially puppies

misdee · 02/06/2010 19:03

i'm not sure of the details about how the contracted it. all i know is he died, and it was apparently parvo

the local rspca recently raised funds to try and save 3 gsd puppies from parvo as well.

kid · 02/06/2010 19:06

It's so sad
I hope they can get it under control and stop dogs and puppies from dying

misdee · 02/06/2010 19:07

one local case

darkandstormy · 02/06/2010 20:13

I hope this gets sorted.I once worked in a refuge in Queensland all the dogs had to be put to sleep because of it ,all mainly Australian cattle dogs,it is such a horrible thing to happen.

Vallhala · 02/06/2010 20:43

I hate to say this darkandstormy but the Queensland refuge didn't have to PTS. Sadly it's an economic decision - it's cheaper to kill them all and thus clear the refuge of the disease than to treat them. It happens all too often in pounds over here and in Ireland too.

Even more appallingly some pounds will take the same approach to the easily cured Kennel Cough, prefering to kill the offending dog/s rather than go to the expense of treating the whole pound with antibiotics.

oxocube · 02/06/2010 20:45

Vallhala, that is tragic

Needanewname · 02/06/2010 20:52

When I was younger, our dog got parvo, luckily he survived. I know this is a terrible disease, but just want to reassure people that it isn;t always a killer

oxocube · 02/06/2010 20:54

Needanewname, was he vaccinated?

Needanewname · 02/06/2010 21:01

I can;t remeber, I was only 10 when we got him - lovely dog

Lizcat · 02/06/2010 21:09

The stats on the vaccine - newer parvo 2b vaccine (this is not all vaccines currently used) is that 98% of dogs who are vaccinated are protected from the disease regardless of which strain they contract.
Also the PDSA are now reporting a big increase in cases nationwide so it looks like there is going to be an epidemic. This is probably related to the decease in number of vaccinated dogs.

kid · 02/06/2010 21:43

So as long as a puppy is vaccinated, it stands a good chance of not contracting this disease?

I feel very unlucky with dogs at moment after my puppy died during a routine op. So even though figures are good for 98% of dogs, there is still that 2% that worries me
