hi we are getting our new pup in June , but we have lots of stray cats around that often sleep in our garden & poo i must admit i do leave out milk & food leftovers etc for them as they look half starved but would they cause any harm to the pup when we get him as he wont be fully vaccinated yet could he catch anything by playing out in the garden during the day as he will be sleeping indoors at night . any advice would be great thanks

I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem. I always presumed cat and dog infections were specific only to their own species but I could be wrong. I have a pup and 2 cats who roam (although they are vaccinated/chipped etc) so I guess in theory, they could pass on disease to our pup but she is fine. Also, lots of other cats are in the neighbourhood and come into our little garden. Vet mentioned no possibility of a risk and he treats our cats and dog.

thanks oxocube dh got me worried earlier as he reckons the stray cats might attack pup if he was let out the garden alone , i have four strays fast asleep on my patio right now , they are lovely but then it just dawned on me that the pup will not be fully vaccinated therefore would he be OK around the cats

With my puppy, I was around her more or less constantly for the first couple of weeks anyway. I was a bit concerned about our own cats even though they had grown up with our old dog but they were fine with her. Others may come here and have more valuable advice. Alternatively, try to google and see what you come up with

A couple of my friends have Cavaliers. I got my pup at 7.5 weeks too . We just got back from a lovely walk in the woods - I love my dog soooooo much

ahhh oxo i know exactly what you mean i am in love with our pup before we even have him , i swear i text the breeder weekly to check up on how he is doing as i have been in contact with her before pup was even born lol .
i have heard a few horror stories about cavaliers suffering from heart murmurs & that they can have problems with their skull etc so i am a little bit worried about those conditions , have your friends had any health worries with their cavs ?

No, they have been fine but they did go to a very reputable breeder (as I'm sure you have) and were on a waiting list for quite a long time. They are very sweet dogs. One friend also has a ruby cav! Have you thought of a name yet? Our goldie is Phoebe.

togoodtobetrue · 16/05/2010 11:09

yep we have been on a waiting list so hopefully thats a good sign pup is supposed to come ikc registered (in Ireland) & vac/wormed & a certificate of health by a vet so the breeder does seem to be reliable [fingers crossed emoticon]
ahh phoebe is a very cute name for a GR - No name for pup yet DH would like to call him BOO (after the little girl in monsters ink) lol ds & i like max , DD isn't bothered at all lol .
Actually dh wanted a labrador or a springer spaniel (a medium sized dog) but seeing as its me that usually does most of the walking & care i wanted a small dog .
