Was walking my dog by river and he sniffed out 2 lovely guinea pigs hiding underneath a tree. tried for ages to catch them but they just didnt want to be caught! looks to me like someone has dumped them - there are no houses nearby really where they could have escaped from.
Any advice? any use to ring RSPCA? tia

Any update? What a dreadful thing to do to little gps. There are so many rescue places around. I'm worried they will eat something toxic.

flipflopper · 13/05/2010 20:30

thanks fr replies,
went back with a fishing net and caught them! they are now in the cat's basket and i'm going to ring vets tomorrow to get them checked over.
of course kids want to keep them!

And so you should .

We have 2 piggies and one was dumped but at least they dumped him at the rescue place.

MedusaHead · 13/05/2010 20:35

Yes, do keep them. Guinea pigs are so lovely and low maintenance. I love my guinea pigs and I know I will be tempted to have some even when the DC's are all grown up, (don't tell my DH that).

OrmRenewed · 13/05/2010 20:36

Lovely! I love gps.

ZZZenAgain · 13/05/2010 20:39

yes tube with some dandelion leaves inside. They like tunnels

wouldn't have thought they would have much of a chance in the wild really. I think someone might have set them free, no longer wanted to keep them

silver73 · 13/05/2010 21:53

That is wonderful news! Poor little gps would not have stood a chance out there. I cannot believe that someone would be so ignorant/cruel to do dump them. They are such lovely little creatures.

flipflopper · 14/05/2010 12:31

I took them into the vets this morning and they said they would keep them for a week, see if anyone claims them, check them over, and if nobody has claimed them by next wk, they are ours to keep!

Those gps are so lucky that you found them. How are the piggies?

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 17/05/2010 19:36

Awww thats fab i hope you get to keep them - any idea how old they are? We have two and tonight i have just had one of mine sat on my knee like a cat would for a good 40 mins - totally the best pets ever .

flipflopper · 20/05/2010 21:31

Well got a call from the vets today and nobody has claimed them so far so we can pick them up on Monday! They are 2 boys and healthy not sure how old they are. Kids are looking forward to gettingthem home, they are just arguing over names... Dd wants tom and jerry, ds wants mario and luigi!

Meant to say, thought it was not a good idea keeping 2 boys together, will they not fight?

We keep two boys together - they are fine

sharbie · 20/05/2010 21:39

Mine used to love cucumber. They are sooooo cute.Love the noises they used to make for their dinner.

kingprawntikka · 21/05/2010 10:11

We have two boys together too, as long as they have plenty of space they will be fine, also it's a good idea to give them a food bowl each rather than sharing. There is a website for guinea pig owners called Rodents with Attitude.
I've found it really useful since we got our guineas and it also has a talk forum which is great to get advice.

kingprawntikka · 25/05/2010 13:07

How are your guinea pigs settling in Flipflopper?. Guineas are sooo cute and make lovely pets.

ZZZenAgain · 25/05/2010 13:09

they can fight

girls can fight too. Mine get pmt by the looks of things

nickytwotimes · 25/05/2010 13:15

Aw, how lovely that you managed to catch them.

They are VERY lucky indeed as they wouldn;t stand a chance in the 'wild' wee things.

I had 2 boys together and it was fine until the older one got ill. After that we had to separate them for the last year of the older one's life as the junior one was trying to become dominant and kept trying to attack him. They can live together quite well though. Lucky boys!

flipflopper · 27/05/2010 19:46

well, we picked them up from the vet on monday and they are settling in lovely. We have called them tom and jerry, they are still quite nervous of us, one more so than the other, but we are picking them up and handling them lots so hoping they will soon get used to us!
