a couple of weeks ago we bought ds a fish. i dont even know what type of fish it is, its gold with a floaty tail and fins. anyway ive noticed that when it poos it always does so in the same spot. front left crner of the tank. and it satys there til its finished. does this mean my fish is brighter than my dog?

It's brighter than one of my cats too for that matter... and my kids!

Fish are weird, i had a goldfish for 7 years who'd pick stones up in it's mouth and rearrange them around his tank, he liked it just so. Every time i cleaned his tank he's go into a franzy reorganising all his pebbles into just the right spots!

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 10:23

lol thats fab!

StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2010 10:26

can you lift it out & hold it over the toilet when you notice it wriggling and squirming?
or is that sadistic?

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 10:30

lol maybe if i kept a water spray on hand...

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2010 10:32

yes, how do you get a reluctant fish to wee
presumabbly running a tap won't help

StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2010 10:33

right i think i seiously need to go to the shop & interact with some rl people - am going a bit odd

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 10:34

lol maybe you need to do the opposite keep whispering "dry, hot desert..." to him....

OP posts:
sweetnitanitro · 13/05/2010 12:48

Never heard that before it sounds like it's a goldfish, they poo a lot and get massive so it's a good thing it always poos in the same place!

MayorNaze · 13/05/2010 12:49

how marvellous see if you can enter it for britains got talent, far more impressive than some of the acts IMO...

twoisplenty · 13/05/2010 12:52

On a slightly different theme, I told my dd yesterday that I had cleaned the fish (I meant cleaned the tank). She said, "Did you actually clean the fish?" I could just imagine the soap suds and scrubbing brush!

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 12:54

mayornaze, i know! i mean who in their right mind would want to see another dance/singing act when you can see a fish pooing!

sweet, the poos are HUGE, ds is fascinated by them. he gets v excited and starts shouting "look mummy, nemo's doi ng another poo... no, look at it" cue forcing my head round so i can see said excrement

OP posts:
TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 12:58

lol twoisplenty, ds keeps wanting to cuddle his fish. he thinks its going to get sad without cuddles.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 13/05/2010 13:09

lol that reminds me, whenever we go out DS gets very excited by HORSE POO HORSE POO MUMMY LOOK!!
and then we have the conversations about why horses poo in the street and humans poo on the toilet (except you don't ds )

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 13:34

lol, ds wants to see nemo's narg narg (penis) he found it hard enough to understand that I didnt have one, let alone a fish!

he's pooing again! i swear he craps more than any other animal!

OP posts:
sweetnitanitro · 13/05/2010 17:45

Yeah, goldfish do poo a lot that's why they need such big tanks and filters. They are poo machines.

LilRedWG · 13/05/2010 17:47

Gold fish poo gives me the heebies - no idea why, it just does. Shudder.

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 18:17

sweet, am cleaning him out tomorrow

red, its the stringiness of it. and the fact that they swinm around with it attached.

OP posts:
sweetnitanitro · 13/05/2010 18:41

It's not a good thing if it's stringy. Fishy could be constipated, try squishing up the inside bit of a pea (don't give him the skin) and feed him that instead of his normal dinner, that should get things moving and his poo will be green which is sure to fascinate your DS!

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 18:45

really? shouldnt it come out in a string? what should it look like? and do i really want to feed ds's excrement obsession?

OP posts:
Mercedes519 · 13/05/2010 18:48

Be grateful you only have one fish. If you have two then they eat each other's poo - sometimes nibbling it straight out of the other one's bottom.

sweetnitanitro · 13/05/2010 18:52

It shouldn't be hanging on to them for ages, it should just break off. It'll be a similar colour to whatever they eat but if it has bubbles in or goes white or hangs out of them for ages then that's usually a sign of constipation. It's easily fixed with a bit of fresh veg, I would give him a pea or a bit of romaine lettuce once a week to stop it from happening. Goldfish need more veggies than most fish and the flake food you get in the shops isn't really that good for them to eat all the time.

My DD is only 19 mo so I have yet to experience the bodily functions obsession

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 13/05/2010 19:00

mercedes... ewwwwwwwwwwww!

thank you sweet, shall defrost a pea now! do i need to break it up or just drop it into the water?

OP posts:
sweetnitanitro · 13/05/2010 19:34

You need to boil it so the skin can be peeled off, then just squash it between your fingers. Don't let him eat the skin, he won't be able to digest it.

thisisyesterday · 13/05/2010 19:39

omg, i have my mumsnet set to classic... so i read threads on one page, bottom to top

so, i see this thread about a fish, and the frist reply i see is

"You need to boil it so the skin can be peeled off, then just squash it between your fingers"

was a bit until i read the rest lol

thisisyesterday · 13/05/2010 19:41

and surely this helps with cleaning? get a little net and just scoop it out each time!
