Leaving baby and cat in the same room?

Just wanted to get others' opinions on this. I have an 8 week old DD, and a 7 year old cat. The cat has so far shown no interest in the baby beyond sniffing her occasionally. Usually DH and I try to keep an eye on the cat's whereabouts and don't tend to leave them alone together if we're in a different room. I have been getting more lax about it recently (just had a shower, and both cat and baby are fast asleep in the living room). Is this risky? Am I being overly cautious if I keep them separated, or is it just not worth the risk? I suppose the "risk" as I imagine it would be the cat accidentally smothering the baby (has that ever actually happened?), or jumping up and scratching her.

My cat was a bugger for cwtching up in baby things. I think you can get a net so the cat can't get in and smother the baby I myself have woken to a cat sleeping on face and it does stop you breathing.

This is what I mean

Thanks slushy. I have a cheapy cat net off Amazon, it just hooks over the Moses basket or cot. I'm just not sure if it's worth bothering and was wondering what others do.
