how often do should you take him out during the night to toilet? i know during the day should be about every half hour or so but at night they sleep more and dont at so it wouldn't need to be that often. anyone with experience of this?

not very experienced as only had puppy for a week but I don't take her out at night at all, and she hasn't had any accidents.

is she in a crate at night? we have a crate and that's where any new puppy will sleep but i was thinking i would at least need to go out twice during the night, but again, i dont know this is just a guess based on how often they go during the day.

My new puppy is in a crate and would need to go out once in the night to start with. I stayed up with her til about 11/12 and then she would wake up about 2 or 3 to go again.

She is about 13 weeks now and takes herself off to bed about 10pm and refuses to get up and wee once she has plonked herself in bed, she makes it through most of the night, this morning it was 5am, sometimes it is 6 or 7am.

It depends partly on the breed and size I think. My goldie never peed in the night, even at 7 weeks he went right through in the big crate. I've never once had to get up for him. At the beginning he did about 11pm to 6.30am, now I usually put him in the crate at 9.30 or 10pm and get him out around 6.30. He doesn't seem to mind being left crated until 7.30am at the weekends. He's 6.5months now.

i usually head to bed about 11 and am up for about 6ish so similar times to romanarama and thruthisinthewine.

I never did. We put puppy training pads at the opposite end of the utility room to his bed, he used those while he still needed to go in the night, then the pads started being clean and dry in the morning so we stopped using them.

We would have needed a baby monitor to hear him barking in the night anyway -our house is very long and our bedroom is at the opposite end.

i was thinking i would just get up about 2 and then 4 and take it out or would that rain it to go during the night?

I only ever get up to if ours cries to go in the the night, if it doesn't cry to go out then I wouldn't get up to pre-empt it.

booyhoo · 29/04/2010 10:33

that makes sense truth, i am just running through everything in my head before we buy a puppy so thank you all for sharing.

If you're getting a lab or similar-sized dog, I'd crate the puppy and ignore the cries, at least for a 6/7 hour stretch. If it's a little dog or a toy dog then I expect that would be cruel.

ditavionteased · 29/04/2010 11:17

mine is a border terrier, she is going to bed about 10pm, and not getting up till 6ish, she is 9 weeks today.

Slubberdegullion · 29/04/2010 11:23

My lab puppy is 10 weeks old today and I am getting up once in the night for her. I set my alarm and pop down, wake her up, let her out, wee command, she wees and gets a treat. No play, talking, patting or eye contact (v Gina!). Then back into the crate and jobs a goodun. No crying at all.

She wakes me up at about 6 so I go down and potter about in the kitchen ignoring her until she stops then I let her out for a wee.

I'm moving my alarm clock forward by about 5 mins everynight to assist with the stretching (how I love that phrase).

I have absolutely no idea if I need to be doing the night time trip at all, but I'd rather go through a month or so of disturbed nights (as it really only takes 5 mins and I get a lovely reinforcable command-wee-treat episode) than let her soil her crate.

Slubberdegullion · 29/04/2010 11:24

oh and she goes into her crate (which is now a play pen) at about 10pm.

Mine's 13 weeks and is now clean through the night. I never thought to take her out during the night but expected accidents. She was house trained after two pee's indoors and the nights followed quickly after.

A lot like potty training really!
