I think we may be overexercising our Doodle pup, can you please tell me how much exercise she should have. By that I mean walks/runs not playing in the garden.
thanks

About 45 mins per day, split into 2-3 walks.

I think she has more poodle than lab, (apart from her appetite ) I thought that 45 mins twice a day was for a full grown dog, we tend to do three half hour walks a day, but more at the weekend, especially when the weather is so great.
Anyone else?

My lab breeder has told me 5 mins per month TOTAL, not twice a day. It say the same on the labradorforums site too.

pinkbraces · 25/04/2010 21:21

its about half grass and half pavement. Why is there a difference?

Because of the impact/stress on their joints. Grass has some give in it while pavement doesn't.

The rule for labradors is 5 mins for every month total exercise until the dog has stopped growing - as slubber says.

Joints are very, very delicate when dogs are growing - I won't let my puppies do stairs or jump up or down until they're at least 6 months old. I ease up on it as they develop muscle to support their joints though.

Mutt, the rule of thumb for any large breed puppy is five minutes per day per month of age, so 45 minutes per day for a nine month old.

In any case, I would much rather see a dog under exercised at a young age, and occupied in other ways, than over walked.

thanks everyone, I think I will go with the 45 mins per day, plus training and playing.

I was told it was 5 mins per month per day for my Labradoodle and have been sticking to this. Training sessions have been essential for keeping her busy. I get very excited on the third of each month when she clocks up another 5 mins, how sad is that !
