fish has red open gills

hi, my goldfish has gills that seem to be wide open, showing red underneath. This is a change from the normal 'closed' look where you can't see inside them for the most part. What is this about and what should we do?

Is the fish gulping a lot? It sounds like a water quality problem. Have you got a water testing kit? If you tell me how big the tank is and how many fish/what type of fish you have I might be able to help you out.
