MY friends dog has been stolen from outside the Factory Shop in Ben Rhydding near Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

Her name is Roxy and she's a 4-year-old chihuahua with very distinctive colouring. She is chocolate and tan, with a white chest. This kind of colouring is very rare - you would know if you saw her. She has been spayed, which makes her of no value to breeders or anybody wanting to sell her.

Roxy is not lost - she has been taken, and we need to find her quickly. She'll be very frightened and desperate to come home.

If you've seen her - or even think you've seen her - please contact us straight away.

Substantial reward offered for her safe return.

Very sorry to learn of this. Please tell your friend to email the details to the DogLost website and to keep checking back there.

IME the key is to make Roxy too hot to handle. That means posters everywhere, both in the area she was stolen and further afield, nearby towns, cities and villages. Email a poster to every vet in the area and beyond, put them in pet shops, bus shelters, school notice boards and/or outside schools... anywhere where there are a large number of passers-by in particular. Stress that she is spayed.

Post on Facebook, Twitter etc and beg others to cross post further. Also keep in close contact with local rescue and the dog warden and speak to the latter personally as he/she might know of likely areas where dog thieves operate.

I've emailed the info to my animal rights and rescue contacts and I know they'll forward it further.

I'm going to get flamed for this but I don't care, I work in the interests of dog welfare not political correctness. It's not uncommon for the travelling community to havve a dog they shouldn't in my experience so if there is a camp within a fair distance of the theft put plenty of posters up there... as I said, make her too hot to handle. Put posters up also in local parks and dog walking areas so people can keep an eye out and spread the word.

Finally, is there any chance that the theft might have been caught on CCTV? Ask the local shop-owners and the council about their CCTV facilities.

Wishing your friend the very best of luck for the fast and safe return of Roxy.

Val.

PS Search for websites like this one (NetMums etc etc), those run by rescues - even cat/rabbit/whatever rescue websites will be compassionate and take note of/forward your message, it doesn't have to be a dog rescue. WRT asking dog rescue to keep their eyes and ears open, this may be a starting point www.westyorkshiredogrescue.co.uk/

... and ask them to suggest others nearby. I've emailed a great contact of mine, Suzanne, the owner of Yorkshire Animal Ambulance but I know that she's been having problems with her pc so I'd suggest that you call them - they have a website. Suz knows most of the pounds, rescues and vets in the area (please do tell her that her pal from Poplar Farm Rescue suggested her and sends her best if you feel it will help). Suz is lovely and will do her best to advise, I'm sure.

Also join and post on the Yahoo group UK Animal Rights, on the chat sections of the forums belonnging to DogPages, Rescue Helpers Unite, BigGSD, German Shepherd Rescue and the like, and ask members to forward and crosspost the message. If you/your friend/DH/family etc have a business website or a hobby website, post there and also ask the Mod of your local Freecycle group (and the ones in adjoining areas) if you can put a post on that. Some Freecycle groups have a "cafe" chat group, so look out for those too.

Spread the word as far as possible as it may be the case that the dog has been taken out of the area.

Again, good luck.

is she microchipped? If so worth contacting local vets with a description so they can check if she's brought in.

Just one thing though in response to "She'll be very frightened and desperate to come home." try not to worry about that too much. Dogs are actually quite fickle creatures, and as long as she is being fed and cared for she will be fine.

Still no news but wanted to 'BUMP'.

The latest

We've been passed some new information on the whereabouts of Roxy, who was stolen three weeks ago from Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

It is suspected that Roxy was stolen to sell, and was passed on to a couple - a man with dark hair, and a lady with fair hair. This couple are setting up a business in stolen dogs, possibly to breed them, and have a number of stolen dogs in their possession.

It is most important that people are made aware that Roxy cannot be bred from - she is spayed, which means she cannot have puppies.

The information we have suggests that Roxy is still in the local area. Do you know anybody in West Yorkshire that you could invite to the group, who may in turn have a friend in Ilkley? Please keep inviting your friends from all over the UK, but especially if they are close to Leeds/Bradford.

We need to find this couple before they find out that Roxy is useless to them and she's moved on again - please help get the word out!

URGENT APPEAL - Nottingham area?
We took a call last night from someone in the Nottingham area who bought a Chihuahua for her daughter on Sunday evening - a Chihuahua she now thinks is Roxy. While she hadn't seen this group or heard about Roxy, one of her friends told her about it. The dog's description matches the description of Roxy perfectly, right down to the small bald patch on her neck. We're pretty sure it's her.

We were told she would take a picture of the Chihuahua she bought and send it to us in a picture message so we could confirm whether or not it was Roxy - and no picture ever arrived.

She said she didn't want to call in the first place, so maybe she had second thoughts. Picture messages can also be quite unreliable; perhaps one was sent but just didn't reach us. The caller phoned using a withheld number - so we can't get in touch.

Do you know who she is? Have you seen Roxy?

We are Roxy's family. We have raised her from a 7-week puppy to a 4-year-old dog and we love her like she was our baby. We are desperate to have her home and have spent four weeks trying to track her down. Please, if you know anything about her whereabouts, just get in touch

Oh Jeez, how upsetting for you. All I can think of is this:

Chi's are rare - keep making her too hot to handle. Get anyone you can in the area to put posters up. Email all Notts-based forums going... start with the Nottingham one on Local MN. And surely one day she will need to see or be registered with a vet, so email every Notts area vet you can find with a picture and description and ask them to display it.

Pass what you know onto the Police too. Maybe they can locate the number, I don't know.

Hopefully you will have listed Roxy on DogLost by now, so do update, it has a good success rate. Post this too on DogPages, the chat forum of BigGSD (no matter that she's a Chi, we're all doggy people), to Notts area rescues which have a website forum, and to any other similar ones for the area.

GOOD LUCK.

is she chipped? If she's chipped then easy enough to prove that she's yours. If not then sadly it's impossible to prove either way.

sullysmum · 21/04/2010 16:42

She is my friends chi, listed all over on forums and postered in streets, etc etc i did 3 nottingham forums yesterday and about 2 dozen others prior to that 4 weeks ago when she went missing, she is a very unusual colouring, dont know about microchip dont think she is?
