Anyone taken a dog on an overnight ferry?

Just noticed that the Amsterdam to Newcastle ferry now takes animals. Its a long overnight crossing (15 hrs) but I'm thinking of this for the summer for our new dog. Has anyone done this route and can comment on the crate sizes, opportunities to visit the dog during the crossing, the care from ferry staff etc. Our previous dog was far too nervous to do this (a jumpy rescue dog)so stayed in kennels on the rare occassions I went anywhere.

TIA

I haven't done this route, but we have done the Dublin to Liverpool route, which is about 9/10 hours with our dogs. We always ask to park on the lower deck, and then leave them inside the car with the windows open slightly and also leave them a bowl of water and bones/toys. It is plenty cool enough for them. I wouldn't leave them in the 'kennels' (crates) they provide at all, they are always full of barkng, unhappy dogs and not at all secure.

You aren't supposed to be able to go onto the car decks during a crossing, but we have found some of the staff are more accomodating than others and will allow us to check. The dogs have always been fine though, but are chilled in general and well used to car travel. It still made me feel sick the first time though...

Thank you. The ferry 'blurb' says that 'some/limited access is allowed' to the deck where they keep the animals. Their info also says there are 7 large crates - does this mean that only 7 dogs would be allowed on each crossing ie a separate crate for each dog or would they have to share? Our new dog is an unknown quantity as yet - we pick her up next week - but I am just musing over possibilities for the future. One of the things which spoils my trips back to see my parents in England is missing my animals!
