I see a large number of pigs micro and otherwise professionally. What do you need to know?

Piglady · 15/03/2010 11:55

Hi

I am reading mixed reviews on them. I would like a couple but want to go to a reputable breeder who will give me support afterwards should I need it.

A lot of local agricultural colleges do small holder training days which could be worth doing as the will cover all basic animal husbandry. Micro pigs are quite prone to arthritis at and early age and this can cause a number of problems.
Remember that these are still classed as farm animals you would need to be registered with defra, keep movement records and medicines records. Also if there are outbreaks of any of the cloven hoofed diseases such as foot and mouth or classical swine fever you would be subject to restrictions just as any other farm animal owner. I don't want to put you off, but to many people don't realise that they are subject to these requirements.

i read that they can be as destructive as children....put me off straightaway!!

What other things should I look for, does anyone know a reputable breeder by any chance??

I did a quick google (mostly to see what micro pigs were!) and came up with this which looks quite helpful. This also seems like a good site for information (is also a breeder).

Thank you MrsL for that. That is one breeder however I wouldn't go to. I have heard of people buying pigs from there that are dying within days of getting them home. A friend of mine bought two which came with mange, she then got another two, one died three days later, so I would give this breeder a wide berth, I think she could well be shut down. I am so worried about buying from a dodgy breeder that is why I thought someone might be able to recommend one.
