My puppy has just eaten a dead mouse discarded by the cats!

Will she be ok?

I chased her around the garden trying to get it out of her mouth (whilst loudly retching.....not easy). But she has chewed and swallowed the entire mouse

Probably - providing she's not still gagging it seems likely that she hasnt choked on the bones so mouse is now in stomach being thoroughly dissolved by stomach acid.

Our lab puppy has been known to kill and swallow whole wild rabbits and has always been fine.

Thanks ArcticFox . She's not gagging and she hasn't been sick so I am assuming it is being digested

Ahh the delights of an HPR breed...

My darling will eat everything - rancid bits of rabbit that even the foxes won't touch, stinky badgers remains...the worst was Christmas morning when she found a rotting (I presume) rabbit carcass in the snow of the back garden and proceeded to eat it by the back door (tip if you plan to do any gundog work/trials with them do not chase them for their 'prize') when she had finished I let her in.

Whilst we were tucking into our smoked salmon and scrambled eggs she vomited it all up in her bed, I have the worlds strongest constitution but the smell was so gross we all ran retching from the kitchen.

Your cats are so kind, making sure the puppy is well fed.

Your puppy is telling you he would love to be be BARF feed

I do wonder how anything that looks so gorgeous can actually be so yukky?

The favourite delicacy for my puppy seems to be cat poo, I think I would prefer dead mice

OMG - if she brings me a dead rabbit she will be in trouble!

Alouiseg - you would think that a dead mouse would be more appealing than watching a dog eat cat poo. However, when you are chasing a up with a pair of legs and a tail hanging out of it's mouth it really is more boak-some than poop!!

I have had cats and dogs eat some right rancid things over the years and it either seems to go down just fine or they vom it back up with no ill effects. They have strong stomachs!

I had to wrestle a dead mouse off my two hens last week! euugh

GrimmaTheNome · 09/03/2010 18:58

The only thing that ever has made my dog ill was licking the lane after a slurry wagon had spilled a bit.

He has a tendancy to walk past roadkill for a few days, only trying to grab it when its nicely matured.

Mine has a dead mouse habit and has perfected being able to crunch and swallow before I have a hope of getting it. Her latest trick is holding it in her mouth so you can't see it and just when you breathe a sign of relief that she is mouse free, she crunches.
