Toilet training dogs question ....

Okay .... this is perhaps an odd question but how does one train outside dogs to use one (pre-determined spot!!) for their toileting? We're about to bring our old lab up to our new house and don't want her using the garden as her personal toilet or the concrete/tarmac for that matter (as she is wont to do!) - would prefer that the children aren't coming in with doggy poo all over their feet ... would much rather direct her towards the field . However, she will be living outside so it's not so simple as bringing her to one spot when we let her out as that just won't happen. Also ... we're hoping to get a pup to keep her company later in the spring so will want the same rules to apply to her!

Any bright ideas please? Thanks!

hi,

you could try feeding her then taking her after 20-30 mins after eating to the preffered spot you want her to do her business, then reward her with a treat each time to reinforce this. If she is older & this is a new process to be learnt you will have to be extremely consistent until she accepts this is where you, as the pack leader, want her to do her business. Other than that you could try sectioning off an area specifically as her toilet area so she can't do it anywhere else or alternatively take her for a walk after feeding (with poo bags) and allow her to toilet away from the garden area altogether. Good luck!

Thanks for replying Policybabe ... that sounds pretty sensible advice. I did hope that I might just be able to whisper softly in her ear and that might be enough but I think that would be purely wishful thinking!! Should be easier with the pup when we get her.
