My puppy is in hospital

With something obstructing his duodenum - he may or may not require surgery depending on whether they can get it to pass by giving him paraffin and who knows what else. The vet said it's almost certainly the chicken wing he had the day before yesterday and that I was dumb to give it to him.

I hope your pup will be alright. My puppy will eat anything and I am constantly having to remind the girls to keep their toys upstairs. He has already crunched up part of a plastic ruler and a biro. He also eats poo of any description, but particularly from our chickens. Good luck.

Oh no romanarama, that's awful news

Have you had any more updates?

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 04/03/2010 13:12

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 04/03/2010 14:12

Oh no, your poor pup . Hope you get some good news very soon.

Romanarama · 04/03/2010 16:57

vet just called and said it looks like whatever it is is going through after all, so with any luck they won't need to operate. He's been vomiting a few times though, so they will keep him overnight. Fingers crossed I'll be able to pick him up tomorrow. Thanks for your good wishes.

Madsometimes · 05/03/2010 10:37

How is puppy today?

Romanarama · 05/03/2010 10:41

Thank you for asking

Just got off the phone to the vet - he has pooed some kind of dishcloth apparently - I'm not sure what it could be as am not aware of him having eating anything like that, but he occasionally sneaks upstairs for a minute if the kids leave the gate open, so may have found something up there. Anyhow, all seems to be well now and I can collect him at 6pm so very relieved!

Fantastic!

I am always warning Blondie about the dangers of Woofa's J-Cloth habit.

Brill, brill, brill - have a fabulous weekend x

controlfreakery · 05/03/2010 11:49

op, how did you know something was v wrong? my puppy has been dry retching (like a cat with a hairball) for a week. vet has given anti imflammatories and says he thinks it's a cough rather than anything stuck etc... but still doing it. my initial concern was that she'd eaten something that was stuck iyswim...
v glad your pup is ok.

Romanarama · 05/03/2010 12:41

Thanks Bella. I hope it hasn't all been too stressful for him.

control he was off his food for 24 hours, then vomited, then slept OK, but had no breakfast the next day, didn't want to go for a walk, and then vomited again, first something solid and then was heaving and bringing up a bit of bile.

My vet x-rayed straight away as he said 5-month old golden retrievers don't go off their food without very good reason (and he didn't have a temperature). I'm glad he did, as it may well have been the paraffin oil he's been having since yesterday morning that's got the cloth out. If I'd waited I suppose he might have needed abdominal surgery which would have been v.traumatic and expensive.

I was already being very vigilant and will try to be even more vigilant from now on!

glad he is better

yes bella, woofa does have a loving of blue/white dishcloths

mb and i always try to mke sure he can not reach them - but saying that, woofa can reach anywehere - up on his back paws he is well over 5ft!!!

sullysmum · 05/03/2010 16:18

That was very lucky.........i wonder if its a kids sock hes swallowed?

minimu · 05/03/2010 16:42

So glad things are ok.

vorpalblade · 05/03/2010 16:45

So glad pup is OK. It is just hideous when they are ill. If it's any consolation my very vigilant friend's setter ate an entire hand towel! Sometimes they do just do bad things, despite your best intentions.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 06/03/2010 02:09

So glad he is OK. They are flipping pickles with what they find to eat, the DC's were much easier as toddlers

She has perfected the art of carrying in the dead mice she finds when the cat has killed them. She does it making it look as if she hasn't got anything. You just settle down in the sofa and a horrible crunching starts, yuck.
