Puppy's first season

Hi our puppy is in week two of her first season - she's been really good at keeping herself clean - but wondered how long the season is meant to last?

The average is about 3 weeks but it will vary from dog to dog, and their first season can be all over the place. Ours is 10 months old and her lady parts (!) have been swollen up for about 4 weeks now with no sign of blood, so we've been waiting patiently for her season to start, examining her ten times a day and whenever she rolled over for a tummy rub! But when we took her to the vet on Saturday she examined her and thinks she's actually nearing the end of her season now, and has just had very little blood so we've missed it.

Just be careful when you think she's stopped bleeding though, as this is her most fertile time rather than the end of her season - usually they bleed for a week or so, have no blood for a week or so (fertile time) and then bleed for another week. Or they may bleed right through - or, like mine, seem not to bleed at all! T'is all very confusing, but this site is helpful

Thanks- she's been good - not much bleeding this week - so will be extra careful with her - bless her she looks as if she needs a hot water bottle and some chocs! Thanks again for the site too

I definitely think we are more sympathetic about these things than men are! Mine has been very clingy to me recently and can take or leave DH, so I think she realises he doesn't share her pain and has chosen to have nothing to do with him
